A Spatial Analysis of Kirsten Boie’s “Everything Will Be Alright” in the Context of Migration

Abstract

This study explores the role of space in the construction of migrant and refugee identity through Kirsten Boie's bilingual story Everything Will Be Alright (Bestimmt wird alles gut), published in both English and German-Arabic. The narrative portrays the migration journey of Rahaf and her family from Syria to Germany. The study examines the physical, social, and psychological spaces depicted in the story and how these spaces influence the characters' experiences of displacement, cultural adaptation, and identity formation. Designed as a qualitative inquiry employing document analysis, the study investigates the symbolic and literal meanings of various settings, including the family home in Homs, reception centers, and container housing in Germany. The theoretical framework draws on Deleuze and Guattari's concept of the "deterritorialized body," Michel Foucault's "heterotopia," and Edward Said's perspectives on "space and identity" to analyze the complexities of refugee experiences. The findings emphasize how physical displacement, social isolation, and the absence of familiar cultural institutions contribute to the family’s sense of displacement and identity crisis. Additionally, the depiction of public spaces, such as school, symbolizes both the challenges and opportunities for social integration. The study aims to provide a nuanced understanding of the emotional and psychological landscapes of migrants and refugees, highlighting the critical role of space in shaping identity amidst the challenges of adapting to a new cultural environment.

Kirsten Boie’nin “Everything Will Be Alright” Hikayesinin Göç Bağlamında Mekansal Analizi

Öz

Bu çalışma, Rahaf ve ailesinin Suriye'den Almanya'ya göçünü anlatan Kirsten Boie’nin yazdığı hem İngilizce hem de Almanca-Arapça iki dilli olarak yayınlanan “Everything Will Be Alright” (“Bestimt Wird Alles Gut”) hikayesi aracılığıyla göçmen ve mülteci kimliğinin inşasında mekanın rolünü araştırmaktadır. Çalışma; hikayede tasvir edilen fiziksel, toplumsal ve psikolojik mekanları ve bu mekanların karakterlerin yerinden edilme, kültürel uyum ve kimlik oluşumu deneyimlerini nasıl etkilediğini araştırmaktadır. Nitel olarak desenlenen bu çalışma, özellikle doküman analizi kullanarak Humus'taki aile evi, kabul merkezleri ve Almanya'daki konteyner konutlar gibi çeşitli ortamların sembolik ve gerçek anlamlarını incelemektedir. Deleuze ve Guattari'nin "yersiz yurtsuz beden", Michel Foucault'nun "heterotopya"sı ve Edward Said'in “mekan ve kimlik” perspektiflerinden alınan teorik çerçeveler, mülteci deneyimlerinin karmaşıklığını analiz etmek için kullanılmaktadır. Çalışma, fiziksel yerinden edilmenin, toplumsal izolasyonun ve tanıdık kültürel kurumların eksikliğinin ailenin yerinden edilmişlik hissine ve kimlik krizine nasıl katkıda bulunduğunu vurgulamaktadır. Ayrıca hikayede okul gibi kamusal alanların tasviri, toplumsal bütünleşme için zorlukları ve fırsatları simgeler. Bulgular, göçmen ve mültecilerin duygusal ve psikolojik manzaralarına dair ayrıntılı bir anlayış sağlamayı, yeni bir kültürel ortama uyum sağlamanın zorlukları arasında kimliklerini şekillendirmede mekanın kritik rolünü vurgulamayı amaçlamaktadır.
