Abstract

The present study undertakes a comprehensive examination of the dynamic and interdisciplinary nature of the smart city concept within the overarching framework of management and business sciences, leveraging bibliometric analysis as a methodological instrument. The primary challenge confronting the research is the limitation imposed by prior studies, which are based exclusively on a single database (Web of Science or Scopus). This restriction precludes the attainment of a comprehensive perspective. Consequently, there is a compelling need to integrate both databases and undertake a comprehensive analysis. The theoretical framework underpinning this study is predicated on the foundational dimensions of smart cities, including technology, governance, economic development, and social equity. The present study explores the transformative effects of these concepts on enhancing the quality of urban life. The objective of the present study is to reveal the general orientation and gaps in the smart cities literature by means of a comprehensive analysis of the relevant publications, authors, keywords, and collaboration structures. This analysis will be conducted in the context of bibliometric data. The materials and methods employed in this study are as follows: the automatic merging, cleaning, and numerical analysis of the 4,448 publications obtained between 1999 and 2025 was conducted using Bibliometrix and R Studio. The findings revealed an annual increase of 19.71% in publications, an average number of citations of 18.24, and intense collaboration between the most prolific authors and specific countries. In the ensuing discourse, the opportunities and gaps created by the integration of technology with urban governance and economic strategies are examined, and the importance of an interdisciplinary approach is emphasized. In summary, the study underscores that the success of smart cities hinges on the strategic integration of technological advancements and transparent, participatory, and sustainable governance models. It is imperative that future research in this domain be founded on interdisciplinary principles.

Yönetim Bilimlerinde Akıllı Şehir Araştırmaları: Web of Science ve Scopus Veri Tabanlarına Dayalı Bir Bibliyometrik Analiz
