Investıgation of Heavy Metal Accumulation Occured In Seawater And Sediment from The Gulf Of Iskenderun

Abstract

This study performed between August 2001 and July 2002 investigated the heavy metal (Cd, Fe, Cu, Pb, Zn, Co, Cr, Al, Mn ve Ni) accumulations in the seawater and sediment from Iskenderun Bay. Heavy metal concentrations in seawater were found as Cd: 0.0550, Fe: 0.2995, Cu: 0.0652, Pb: 0.6173, Zn: 0.0709, Co: 0.2589, Cr: 0.1689, Al: 0.1875, Mn: 0.1079 ve Ni: 0.2769 mg/l. In the same way, these concentrations were found as 4.4725; 49921; 37.053; 141.63; 232.87; 79.040; 1419.8; 25574; 1304.5; 795.81 in sediment, respectively. According to correlation analyses, significant positive correlations between heavy metal concentrations in the water and sediment were found. According to these results, to prevent this heavy metal pollution threat in İskenderun Bay, taking into consideration the biodiversity in this ecosystem, it is thought that it is inevitable that protective measurements must be started as soon as possible
