Determinatıon of the Relationship Between the Amount of Explosive Material and the Explosion Crater in Terms of Post-Blast Explosion Investigation

Abstract

Explosion investigations cover events ranging from natural gas accidents at home to major terrorist attacks. The majority of the explosion investigations carried out around the world are terrorist attacks with bombs. Determining the type of explosive and the amount of explosive material is a priority in the investigation of terrorist attacks with explosions. Making these determinations at an early stage of the investigation will allow the incident to be clarified more quickly. There are some characteristic features of the crime scenes where the bomb attacks took place. The eruption crater is the most important and also the richest source of evidence. The size of the explosion crater varies depending on the amount of explosive used in the incident. In this reserach, a numerical study was carried out on the craters formed by six explosive devices of different weights placed under the surface in order to establish the relationship between the amount of explosive material and the explosion crater. Considering the real events, explosive devices were created and the data obtained by conducting crime scene investigations after the explosions were presented. It has been observed that the diameters and volumes of the craters formed by the devices with a higher amount of explosive material are larger than the devices with less explosive material. Expanding such studies in order to be able to determine the amount of explosive material in the investigation of terrorist bombing attacks will make great contributions to the literature and law enforcement units in the field. This study is a pilot study examining the relationship between the amount of explosive material and the explosion crater in Turkey, and is intended to contribute to researchers who want to conduct studies on the subject in the future.
