Energy-Aware Distributed Isolation Method Against Resource Consumption Attacks for Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks: E-DIP

Abstract

This study proposes the Energy-Aware Distributed Isolation Protocol (E-DIP), developed against Resource Depletion attacks that rapidly drain the energy of battery-powered nodes in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs). Unlike traditional attack detection approaches, E-DIP offers a distributed and reactive architecture that isolates the malicious node at the neighborhood level the moment it is detected. In this way, while the spread of malicious traffic within the network is prevented, unnecessary processing load and energy consumption on innocent nodes are reduced. The protocol aims to maintain security while keeping computational cost low by integrating lightweight early authentication and blacklist dissemination mechanisms. E-DIP has been comprehensively evaluated under different attack scenarios in NS-3 simulation environment. Performance analysis was conducted using metrics of per-node energy consumption, network lifetime, and isolation success. The obtained results show that E-DIP reduces per-node energy consumption under attack to 34.4 mJ and provides approximately 90% energy savings compared to the standard AODV protocol. In addition, proposed method offers lower computational cost and higher isolation effectiveness compared to current approaches such as TASEHP and SDN-MANET. The findings reveal that the combined use of reactive isolation and lightweight security mechanisms is effective in sustaining network lifetime in mission-critical MANET scenarios.
