Sense-Datum Theory and Phenomenal Indeterminacy of Perception

Abstract

According to the sense-datum theory, things that we are directly aware of in perception are not external, physical objects but rather some mental items that are called ‘sense-data’ and that mediate perception. The strongest argument given for sense-datum theory is based on perceptual states such as illusions, hallucinations, double seeing, in which the object being perceived and the thing that the subject is directly aware of do not match. It is claimed that the difference that is supposed to exist between appearance and reality, shows that direct objects of awareness should be sense-data. On the other hand, some philosophers reject the sense-datum theory by claiming that perceptual data can be indeterminate, hence it would be implausible to claim that they exist. The aim of this paper, is to present this argument known as the ‘speckled hen’ and to show that it cannot falsify sense-datum theory. To this aim, Fred Dretske’s theory of perception through which he distinguishes ‘awareness of things’ and ‘awareness of facts’ will be taken as a ground.

Duyu Verisi Kuramı ve Algının Fenomenal Belirsizliği

Abstract

Duyu verisi kuramı algılamada doğrudan farkındalığına sahip olunan şeyin, dışsal, fiziksel nesneler değil, ‘duyu verisi’ adı verilen ve nesnelerin algılanmasına aracılık eden bir takım zihinsel unsurlar olduğunu iddia eder. Duyu verisi kuramının en güçlü argümanı, yanılsama, sanrı, çift görme gibi algılanan nesnenin kendisi ile doğrudan farkındalığına sahip olunan şeyin örtüşmediği algısal durumlara dayanır. Buna göre, görünen ve gerçekliğin arasında olduğu düşünülen bu farklılık, doğrudan farkındalığın nesnesinin duyu verileri olması gerektiğini gösterir. Öte yandan, bazı düşünürler algısal verinin fenomenal olarak belirsiz olabileceği, dolayısıyla duyu verilerinin var olduğu iddiasının makul olmadığını dile getirerek duyu verisi kuramını reddetmektedirler. Bu çalışmanın amacı, ‘benekli tavuk’ adı ile anılan bu argümanı değerlendirip duyu verisi kuramının yanlışlığını ortaya koyamadığını göstermektir. Bunun için Fred Dretske’in algıyı ‘şeylerin farkındalığı’ ve ‘gerçeklerin farkındalığı’ olarak sınıflandırdığı kuramı temel alınacaktır.
