The Profile of the Middle Income Class in Turkey

Abstract

Utilizing the data from Surveys on Income and Living Conditions (SILC), this paper provides a general profile on the middle-income-class in Turkey over the period 2005-2011. In order to define middle-class, a relative income measure is employed and the households in this class are also investigated considering their gender, education level, region and sector of economic activity. The results of the study suggest that individuals in middle-income-class could not have benefited from the positive growth experienced by Turkey from 2005 to 2011. Income inequality in middle income is low and more stabile with respect to general inequality. Another significant finding of the study is that the limited progress in income inequality over 2005-2011 period could not have provided an increase in welfare of the households in middle-income-class

Türkiye’de Orta Gelirli Sınıfın Profili

Abstract

Bu çalışmada, Gelir ve Yaşam Koşulları Anketleri’nden (GYKA) elde edilen verilerden faydalanılarak 2005-2011 döneminde Türkiye’deki orta gelirli sınıfın profili sunulmaktadır. Göreli bir gelir ölçütü kullanarak Türkiye’deki orta sınıfı belirlendikten sonra bu sınıf içerisinde yer alan bireyler, cinsiyet, eğitim durumu, çalışılan sektör ve yaşadıkları bölgeye göre de incelenmektedir. Daha sonra orta sınıftaki gelir eşitsizliğinin durumu Türkiye’deki genel eşitsizlikle karşılaştırmalı olarak değerlendirilmektedir. Çalışmanın sonuçları, 2005-2011 döneminin genelinde Türkiye’nin yaşadığı pozitif büyüme sürecinden orta sınıfta yer alan bireylerin faydalanamadığına işaret etmektedir. Orta sınıftaki gelir eşitsizliği ülke geneline oranla düşük ve durağandır. Bununla birlikte ilgili dönemde, Türkiye’deki gelir eşitsizliğinde meydana gelen sınırlı iyileşmenin orta gelirli hanehalklarının göreli refahında bir iyileşmeyi sağlamaktan uzak olduğu da çalışmanın önemli bulgularındandır
