A Quantitative Investigation of University Students’ Perceptions Concerning the Learning Processes amid the Pandemic of COVID-19

Abstract

COVID-19 pandemic, globally as well in Turkey's Higher Education, made the mandatory transition from face-to-face to distance teaching. It is important to investigate students’, the milestones of higher education institutions, evaluations by comparing face-to-face with distance teaching. This study aims to determine perceptions related to students’ behavior, attitude, and psychology. Qualitative research methodology is used and four main themes and eleven sub-themes are emerged by descriptive analysis. According to the findings, students positively talked about face-to-face, but they expressed more critical views about distance teaching. Regarding the Psycho-social environment, they claimed negative opinions about social relationships and emotional states; while expressing positive opinions about social activities and communal responsibility; some were happy some of them had conflicts related to family relationships. Finally, it was determined that although the students expressed both positive and negative opinions, they tried to adapt to the process and were aware of forming communal consciousness.

Üni̇versi̇te Öğrenci̇leri̇ni̇n COVID-19 Pandemi̇ Dönemi̇ Öğrenme Süreci̇ne İli̇şki̇n Algılarına Yöneli̇k Ni̇tel Bi̇r Araştırma

Abstract

COVID-19 pandemi süreci, tüm dünyada olduğu gibi, Türkiye’de de Yükseköğretim Kurumlarının yüz-yüze öğretimden uzaktan öğretime geçmesini zorunlu kılmıştır. Bu bağlamda yükseköğretim kurumlarının mihenk taşı olan öğrencilerin yüz-yüze ile uzaktan öğretimi kıyaslayarak yapacakları değerlendirmelerin araştırılması önem arz etmektedir. Bu çalışmada, uzaktan öğretim yöntemi ile ders alan üniversite öğrencilerinin davranış, tutum ve psikolojik duygu durumuna ilişkin algılarını belirlemek amaçlanmaktadır. Elde edilen verilerle nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden betimsel çözümleme yapılarak dört ana tema ve on bir alt tema belirlenmiştir. Bulgulara göre, öğrenciler yüz-yüze öğretim ile ilgili olumlu, uzaktan öğretim ile ilgili olarak da daha çok eleştirel görüşler belirtmişlerdir. Psiko-sosyal ortam bağlamında sosyal ilişkiler ve duygu durumları ile ilgili olumsuz; sosyal etkinlikler ve toplumsal sorumluluk bağlamında olumlu; aileleri ile olan ilişkileri açısından da mutlu ve çatışma içerikli farklı ifadeler kullanmışlardır. Sonuç olarak öğrencilerin hem olumlu hem de olumsuz görüş bildirmelerine rağmen sürece uyum sağlamaya çalıştıkları ve toplumsal bilincin oluşması konusunda farkındalıklarının olduğu tespit edilmiştir.
