Evaluation of Anxiety and Depression Levels in University Students Following A Murder Experience

Abstract

Objective: Violence against individuals isincreasing both in the world and in Turkey.Impaired sense of safety and violence exposurecause negative consequences on mental healthsuch as anxiety, depression and posttraumaticstress disorder. The aim of the present study isto investigate the depression and anxiety levelsof university students following a recent murderevent in the university. Method: Following thetraumatic event, a total of 620 university students (343 female, 277 male) were evaluatedwith a demographic inquiry form, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Spielberger State and TraitAnxiety Inventory ( SSAI and STAI respectively).Results: Average age of the subjects is 21,04.Average BDI score was determined as 17,07±10,08, while SSAI and STAI scores were47,37±12,91 ve 44,15± 13,09 respectively.SSAI and STAI scores of the female subjectswere significantly higher than the males. Regarding the cut-off score of the BDI, 48,6 % ofthe subjects revealed a score which is 17 orabove. SSAI, STAI and economic status are determined to be the significant predictors of BDIscore. Conclusion: The depression and anxietyscores of the university students were determined to be high following indirect exposure toviolence. The effects of violence exposure anddecreased sense of safety on mental healthshould be investigated by comprehensive studies
