Evaluation of Anxiety and Depression Levels in University Students Following A Murder Experience

Abstract

Objective: Violence against individuals isincreasing both in the world and in Turkey.Impaired sense of safety and violence exposurecause negative consequences on mental healthsuch as anxiety, depression and posttraumaticstress disorder. The aim of the present study isto investigate the depression and anxiety levelsof university students following a recent murderevent in the university. Method: Following thetraumatic event, a total of 620 university students (343 female, 277 male) were evaluatedwith a demographic inquiry form, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Spielberger State and TraitAnxiety Inventory ( SSAI and STAI respectively).Results: Average age of the subjects is 21,04.Average BDI score was determined as 17,07±10,08, while SSAI and STAI scores were47,37±12,91 ve 44,15± 13,09 respectively.SSAI and STAI scores of the female subjectswere significantly higher than the males. Regarding the cut-off score of the BDI, 48,6 % ofthe subjects revealed a score which is 17 orabove. SSAI, STAI and economic status are determined to be the significant predictors of BDIscore. Conclusion: The depression and anxietyscores of the university students were determined to be high following indirect exposure toviolence. The effects of violence exposure anddecreased sense of safety on mental healthshould be investigated by comprehensive studies

Yaşanan Bir Cinayet Olayı Sonrasında Üniversite Öğrencilerinde Depresyon ve Kaygı Düzeylerinin Değerlendirilmesi

Öz

Amaç: Tüm dünyada ve Türkiye’de kişilere karşı şiddet olayları gün geçtikçe artmaktadır.Güvenlik duygusunun bozulması ve şiddetle karşılaşmak ruh sağlığı üzerinde anksiyete,depresyon ve post travmatik stres bozukluğu gibi pek çok olumsuz etkiye yol açmaktadır. Buçalışmanın amacı bir yüksekokulda yaşanancinayet olayı sonrasında, aynı yüksekokuldaokuyan öğrencilerin anksiyete ve depresyon düzeylerini değerlendirmektir. Yöntem: Süleyman Demirel Üniversitesi Yalvaç Meslek Yüksekokulu’nda okuyan toplam 620 öğrenciye(343 kız, 277 erkek) yaşanan travmatik olayın sonrasında Demografik Veri Formu, BeckDepresyon Ölçeği (BDÖ), Spielberger Durumlukve Sürekli Kaygı Ölçeği uygulanmıştır (sırasıylaSDKÖ ve SSKÖ). Bulgular: Deneklerin yaş ortalaması 21,04’tür. BDÖ puanları ortalama17,07± 10,08, SDKÖ ve SSKÖ puanları sırasıyla 47,37±12,91 ve 44,15± 13,09’dur.Kız Öğrencilerin SDKÖ ve SSKÖ puanları erkek öğrencilere göre anlamlı olarak yüksektir. BDÖ kesme puanına göre deneklerin % 48,6’sında 17 ve üzerinde BDÖ puanı saptanmıştır. SDKÖ, SSKÖ ve ekonomik durum travma sonrası BDÖ puanının anlamlı yordayıcılarıdır. Sonuç: Şiddetle karşılaşma sonucunda üniversite ö¤rencilerinde depresyon ve anksiyete belirtilerinin yüksek düzeyde olduğu saptanmıştır. Kapsamlı çalışmalarla toplumsal şiddet olayları ve genel olarak güvenlik algısının düşmesinin ruhsal sağlık üzerindeki etkileri incelenmelidir.
