From Individual Freedom to Rationalization: Georg Simmel and The Philosophy of Money

Abstract

Georg Simmel is one of the founders of modern sociology; nevertheless, he was discovered relatively late, and studies based on his approach appeared long after his death. Simmel did not seek universal laws, but based his study on a micro level. Therefore, his analysis could be on a daily objects or concepts. Simmel's “The Philosophy of Money” is one example of this, as he explains the "transformation of our mental world" through an object, and explores social changes with the use of money as a “means of payment". Simmel touches on issues such as property, market, contract, enterprise and money without putting forward an economic theory, and discusses social aspects of value formation influenced by names such as Carl Menger. This study elaborates on how Simmel reads the social and understands transformation through money. At the same time, it focuses on how he relates money with social and individual change like individual freedom, objectification, differentiation and rationalization.

Bireysel Özgürlükten Rasyonelleşmeye: Georg Simmel ve Paranın Felsefesi

Abstract

Georg Simmel, modern sosyolojinin kurucuları arasında yer almasına rağmen, kendi yaklaşımlarından etkilenen sosyolojik çalışmaların başlaması nispeten geç dönemlerde gerçekleşmiştir. Genelde, Simmel toplumu anlamaya çalışırken evrensel kanunlar yerine, toplumu daha ziyade mikro düzeyde ele almış ve insanlığın değişimini bir meta analiz düzleminde açıklamak yerine bu değişimi mikro düzeyde analiz etmiştir. Simmel’in Paranın Felsefesi adlı eseri de bu yaklaşımına iyi bir örnektir, çünkü burada kendi ifadesiyle “zihinsel dünyamızın dönüşümünü” okumakta ve insanoğlunun hayatına bir “ödeme aracının” girmesiyle yaşanan toplumsal değişimleri tartışmaktadır. Simmel bir iktisat teorisi ortaya koyma çabasına girmeden mülkiyet, piyasa, sözleşme, girişim ve elbette para gibi konuları tartışmış, Carl Menger gibi isimlerden de etkilenerek değer oluşumunun toplumsal boyutuna değinmiştir. Bu çalışmada Simmel’in toplumsalı okumak ve dönüşümü anlamak için parayı kurgulayış biçimine odaklanılmış ve özellikle paranın gelişiminin bireyin özgürlüğü, nesnelleşme, farklılaşma ve rasyonelleşme üzerindeki etkilerinin bugün dahi geçerli olduğu kendisinden sonraki sosyal bilimcilere yol gösterdiği vurgulanmıştır.
