The views of social studies teachers on socio-scientific issues
Abstract
The study, which aims to investigate the views of social studies teachers on social science issues, was conducted using a basic qualitative research design from qualitative research methods. According to the easily accessible case sampling from the purposive sampling method, the study group of the research consists of social studies teachers who work on a voluntary basis in public schools affiliated to Muğla Provincial Directorate of National Education. The data collection tool used in the study was a semi-structured interview form. The data obtained through the interview form was analysed through content analysis. As a result of the research, it was concluded that 'Instagram' and 'WhatsApp' are among the social media platforms that social studies teachers use the most, while 'Youtube' is the platform that they use the least. Considering the content of the curriculum and textbook, it was concluded that teachers expressed opinions in two categories: the quality and quantity of social science topics and the teaching of social science topics in the social studies course. Regarding the grade level at which social science topics should be taught more in the social studies course and the reasons for this, the research found that the teachers' opinion was that social science topics should be taught more in the 6th grade. Another finding is that teachers' readiness has an important influence on their choice of this grade level.
