EĞİTİMDE BİLİMSEL YAYIN ETİĞİNE BÜYÜYEN TEHDİT: SAHTE DERGİLER VE KONGRELER

Year 2019, Issue: 50, 548 - 576, 26.04.2019

Abstract

GROWING THREAT TO SCHOLARLY PUBLISHING ETHICS IN EDUCATION: PREDATORY JOURNALS AND CONFERENCES

Year 2019, Issue: 50, 548 - 576, 26.04.2019

Abstract

The aim of this study is to inform scholars of education about the growing
danger of predatory journals and conferences (PJC) in scientific publishing
ethics. A rare study (Demir, 2018a) revealed that Turkey ranks third among geographical
locations of predatory journals. Increasing numbers of publications in
predatory journals and participation in predatory conferences is also most
prevalent among researchers from educational fields (Demir, 2018b, 2018c).
Nonetheless, the national literature of education lacks informative studies
regarding PJC. The present study is expected to help fill this gap in the
education literature. The introduction of this paper provides information about
ethical scholarly publishing, followed by a description of the traditional
scholarly publishing model. The open access model and the emergence of
predatory journals is explained next. Common features and methods of PJC are
presented. An insight into the current situation regarding PJC in Turkey is provided
through an analysis of limited national research literature that is available.
The paper concludes with a discussion of harm related to PJC, and
recommendation of preventative measures against them.
