Virological Investigation of Canine Parvovirus Infection in Dogs Housed in Pet Boarding Facilities

Abstract

Canine parvovirus (CPV) infection is a globally prevalent disease characterized by acute necrotic or haemorrhagic enteritis and associated with high morbidity and mortality, especially in puppies aged 4 to 8 weeks. This study aimed to determine the presence and prevalence of parvovirus infection among dogs exhibiting clinical signs of gastroenteritis in pet boarding facilities. In this study, faecal samples were collected from 188 dogs older than 6 months, representing various breeds, both genders and ages, including both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals. The collected faecal samples were tested for the presence of CPV antigen using the direct ELISA method. As a result of the analyses conducted, the presence of CPV antigen was detected in 18.62% (35 out of 188) of the collected samples. No statistically significant difference was found in antigen positivity rates between genders or among different age groups (P > 0.05). This study provides evidence for the presence and prevalence of CPV infection in dogs housed at pet boarding facilities. These data indicate that parvovirus infection in dogs at pet boarding facilities remains a significant health risk despite preventive measures.
