BIT-DEPTH EMOTIONS IN THE EVOLUTION OF COMMUNICATION: AUTHENTICITY IN DIGITAL MUSIC

Abstract

Music has drawn on technological developments throughout history. One of the most prominent such incidences is the replacement of gut strings by steel strings on stringed instruments. Music is the field that has benefited from the development of sound recording technologies. All these incidences have brought in the discussion of authenticity. However, authenticity is a question occupying minds of people and being approached from different perspectives in various fields, so that the concept is not easily definable. Nevertheless, research has been conducted to understand what it is. For example, controlling, establishing a connection, and emphasising moral values have been revealed in consumer behaviour studies. Index authenticity, focusing on the artist, and iconic authenticity, placing the artist within a context, have been identified in the framework of semiology. In another study, layers of authenticity have been discussed as staged, interpersonal, and intrapersonal in the study of vinyl record fans. In music, on the axis of work-performance, performance has been assessed ın terms of authenticity in reference to its closeness to the time and conditions it was created as well as to the composer’s intention. There are, however, movements in which authenticity has an iconic meaning. All these facts about authenticity are present in the digital age as well. Nevertheless, the digital age has led to a climate in which music recording was transformed from a physical medium to online streaming, and communication of this transformation is carried out in an online environment. Audiences’ search for authenticity has been inevitably initiated in the means that emerged after Web 2.0 in communication technologies. What is expected is that the musician establish communication with their audience personally and present themselves outside the commercial structure of the music industry. The more effective a profile of cordial and non-commercial communication, the higher the perception level of authenticity with regard to both the musician and their music.
