Latin Kilise Babaları Perspektifinden Hristiyanlıkta Boşanma ve Yeniden Evlenme

Year 2025, Volume: 12 Issue: 1, 257 - 278, 30.06.2025

Abstract

Divorce and Remarriage in Christianity from the Perspective of the Latin Church Fathers

Year 2025, Volume: 12 Issue: 1, 257 - 278, 30.06.2025

Abstract

The phenomenon of divorce and remarriage in Christianity derives its origin from the Bible. The Bible’s statements on the subject in question were interpreted literally and allegorically by the church fathers and became decisive for Christians. In this context, the subject of this study is the phenomenon of divorce and remarriage in Christianity from the perspective of the Latin Church Fathers. The study is limited to the statements on divorce and remarriage of early Latin church fathers such as Tertullian, Lactantius, Ambrose, Jerome, and Augustine. The hypothesis of the study is that in Christianity, the discourses of Jesus and Paul on divorce and remarriage, as well as the comments of the early church fathers, are decisive. In addition, the study aimed to reveal the aspects on which the aforementioned church fathers agree and disagree on divorce and remarriage. In the study, historical, descriptive and hermeneutic methods of the history of religions were used. The primary sources of the study are the works of the church fathers, especially the Bible; the secondary sources are modern western literature on the subject. The study found that church fathers had different views on divorce and remarriage; it was also seen that, with the exception of Ambrose, the other church fathers displayed an egalitarian approach. Therefore, the study is important in terms of revealing the issue of divorce and remarriage in Christianity from the perspective of the Latin Church Fathers.
