Ethical Principles and Publication Policy

Ethical Principles

Marmara Journal of European Studies (MJES) is committed to upholding the highest standards of academic publication ethics and complying with the principles set out in its Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement. The journal’s publication ethics policies are based on the core practices, guidelines, and policies for journal editors developed by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). In cases involving suspected misconduct, breaches of research and publication ethics, or other unethical publishing practices, MJES refers to the guidelines and publication ethics flowcharts published by COPE. COPE’s guidelines and publication ethics flowcharts are available at https://publicationethics.org/guidance.

Manuscripts submitted to the journal are first reviewed by the Editorial Board for purpose, scope, methodology, and writing principles, and then evaluated through a double-blind peer review process.

Manuscripts submitted to the journal must be prepared in accordance with ethical guidelines, and all citations within the text must be clearly indicated. The acceptable similarity rate for a single work is 4%, with an upper limit of 20%. For articles derived from doctoral dissertations, the similarity rate for a single work is evaluated separately.

The views expressed in published articles do not represent the views of the journal; each article is the sole responsibility of its author(s).

Ethical Responsibilities of Editors

The journal editor decides on the suitability of submissions and whether they will be published. In making this decision, the editor does not consider the author(s)’ race, gender, religion, nationality, or political views; rather, the decision is based on the submission’s alignment with the journal’s publication policy, its originality, and its scientific significance.

Editors or reviewers may not use the information and documents contained in rejected or pending submissions in their own research without the author’s written permission.

Ethical Responsibilities of Reviewers

Reviewers evaluate submitted manuscripts based on their scientific content, without regard to the authors’ ethnic origin, gender, nationality, religious beliefs, or political views.

Reviewers must have no conflicts of interest or competing interests regarding the research, authors, or sponsors.

Reviewers must identify any published works not cited by the author.

Reviewers are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of all information related to the submitted manuscript and for notifying the editor if they become aware of any copyright infringement or plagiarism by the author.

If a reviewer believes that the content of a submitted manuscript is outside their scientific field or expertise, or if they are unable to conduct a prompt review, they must inform the editor and recuse themselves from the review process.

Ethical Responsibilities of Authors

Studies based on fabricated or fraudulent data are unacceptable. Authors must guarantee the accuracy and originality of their data.

If the study involves human subjects, the necessary consent from participants and approval from the Ethics Committee must be obtained from the appropriate institutional authorities. This approval must be stated in the “Methods” section of the article, and the signed Ethics Committee approval must be uploaded to the system along with the article. In cases where the study does not require Ethics Committee approval, this must be clearly stated in the “Methods” section.

Written permission must be obtained from the relevant institutions or individuals for any data collection tools, tables, graphs, maps, and other visuals that belong to third parties and are subject to copyright.

Authors must agree to make reasonable revisions suggested by the journal’s reviewers and editors. If an author refuses to make revisions without acceptable reasons, the submitted article will be rejected.

All authors are required to correct any errors in the submitted article and retract any inaccurate information.
