Abstract

The aim of this study is to evaluate the communication skills of Technology Faculty Wood Working Industrial Engineering students receiving vocational education in terms of their professional roles. The scale of the research was inspired by previously applied scales and adapted for students receiving vocational education using a 5-point Likert-type scale. Data from 380 questionnaires obtained from a total of 850 students enrolled in the Technology Faculty departments of Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University during the 2022/2023 academic years were analyzed in the statistical software package. As a result of the study; it was found that participants' communication competence varied according to gender, age, hometown, high school graduation, and department but did not differ according to the class they were in. It was determined that students could not control their emotions and thoughts in terms of sensitivity competence, were not effective speakers, had problems expressing their emotions and thoughts to others accurately, and occasionally made statements that could damage their relationships with others. Additionally, it was determined that they were not flexible in terms of individual aspects sub-factor in communication, had problems initiating conversation in terms of encouragement competence, were competent in listening skills but felt bored while listening to the speaker, and cared about the gender of the people they communicated with in terms of adaptation competence. The research findings and conclusions are highly valuable in terms of identifying the communication skills and problems of Technology Faculty students receiving vocational education and offering solutions for these issues. This study serves as an example for conducting comprehensive comparisons with different education groups in future research.
