An Investigation Concerned with Importance of the Basic Language Skills in the Science Teaching

Abstract

Students of the premier-middle school use the language as a tool at the stage of knowledge’s getting, understanding, interpreting and transferring. Language as a tool enables the individuals to learn the knowledge through their skills (listening and reading) of understanding what they have been told by verbal or written and also enables the individuals to transfer their knowledge in a correctly and tangible way. The basic language skills which are the main element of language teaching also have an important place in science and technology lessons. In this study, it has been aimed to identify the basic language skills of science and technology teachers and to assign how much and in what ways they use these skills. In accordance with this purpose, the questionnaires which consist of 30 items were applied to 68 teachers who work in schools, located in Istanbul. The data which were obtained through the survey has been evaluated by both qualitative and quantitative methods. The obtained findings are important in terms of ascertaining the science teachers’ level of using the basic language skills and using in science and technology lessons of different kinds technical and method within these skills.
