The Relationship between Self-Efficacy Perceptions Achievements in Special Aptitude Tests and Academic Achievements of Music Teacher Candidates in relation to Their Musical Talent

Abstract

Self-efficacy is the belief of the subject to learn something or perform a skill. Studies have revealed that compared with the students who doubt their skills and capacities, those who have self-efficacy belief are more ready and willing to learn, work harder, are more stable in overcoming difficulties and achieve at a higher success rate. In the music education, the perception of adequate self-efficacy is important in addition to the presence of subject’s musical skills. In this study, the relationship between self-efficacy perceptions of musical abilities, special aptitude test achievements and academic achievements of the students studying in the Music Teacher Department was examined. The research group was formed by 44 students in their first year at the Music Teacher Department of Marmara University. Data of the study were obtained by the Perception of Self-efficacy Scale for Music Ability, special aptitude test grades of the 2010-2011 academic year, and fall semester final grades. The survey results revealed that students’ self-efficacy perceptions of musical abilities are good; there is no significant relationship between the self-efficacy perceptions of musical ability with special aptitude test success, or the self-efficacy perception of musical ability with academic success. It was confirmed that there is a positive, significant relationship between the students’ special aptitude test success with academic success.
