The Effect of Using Literary Materials to Acquire Affective Behaviors in Social Studies Teaching
Abstract
Aim of this research is to explore the effect of acquiring affective behaviors in social
studies teaching through using literary materials.
This study, which is experimental, was conducted in Istanbul Kartal Marmara Basic
School in the 2000-2001 academic year. The research practice was made by using group
sampling on two 5th grade classes while “Country and Nation” unit was being taught. There
were two groups which were called “control” and “experimental”. In the control group
traditional teaching techniques and materials were used; in the experimental group literary
materials were used in addition to these techniques and materials. Cognitive Knowledge Test
and Affective Behavior Attainment Test were used before and after the research practice to
both groups. Questionnaire, which was related to view of students, was applied to
experimental group. In order to compare these two groups t-test was used in connection with
Affective Behavior Attainment Test. Significance was calculated. In favor of experimental
group, the score was 0.01. In experimental group, students’ responses to the questionnaire
showed that they were believed in mastering affective behavioral features.
