Utilization of the Windowing Systems as an Instructional Technology

Year 2002, Volume: 16 Issue: 16, 13 - 28, 25.12.2013

Abstract

The aim of this study is to illustrate some of the range of technical details of windowing systems and to present the utilization of the windowing systems as an instructional technology. In general, a windowing system may be viewed as managing input and output resources, such as the screen display and input devices, in much the same way that an operating system manges disk space and processor time. Windows are areas of a visual display, usually (though not always) rectangular, which divide the physical display area into
several virtual displays (Marcus, 1992). Windows can display data or actions from different host computers, different applications, different files in the same application, or different views of the same file. Windows also allow multiple processes (each typically represented by a different window) to share a single set of physical input or output divices, such as keyboard or mouse. Windowing systems typically contain mechanism to help the user move, resize, scroll, transfer data between, and generally manage multiple windows (Shneiderman, 1992). They provide window facilities for application programs to increase user interaction. Potential
benefits of windowing systems and windowed applications include following:
