Abstract

The Mattering to Romantic Others Questionnaire: Adaptation, Validity, and Reliability Study

Year 2025, Volume: 62 Issue: 62, 44 - 62, 22.07.2025

Abstract

Mattering is defined as the psychological tendency to evaluate the self as significant to specific others (Marshall, 2001). This phenomenon, which is known to be critical for mental health, is also important in the context of romantic relationships. Mattering to romantic partners affects both individual well-being and the course of the relationship.
The main purpose of this study is to adapt the Mattering to Romantic Others Questionnaire, which assesses the perception of mattering to romantic partners in their current relationships, into Turkish. The study group consisted of a total of 438 people (female=330, male=108, mean age =28.21, ±7.46), 216 unmarried and 222 married. The data of the study were collected with personal information form, the Mattering to Romantic Others Questionnaire, the Relationship Assessment Scale (Curun, 2001), and the Self-Disclosure to Romantic Partner Scale (Özdemir & Yazıcı, 2024). The analyses were carried out with SPSS 27.0 and AMOS 20.0 package programmes and descriptive statistics, Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (PMCCC), Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), McDonald’s omega and Cronbach's alpha internal consistency coefficients, split-half, and independent t-test techniques were used. As a result of CFA, it was determined that the model fit the data good in both unmarried (χ2/df =1.55, GFI=.91, CFI=.95, TLI=.95, RMSEA=.05, SRMR=.04) and married (χ2/df =2.40, GFI=.87, CFI=.93, TLI=.91, RMSEA=.07, SRMR=.05) groups. Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient was .87 in the unmarried group and .93 in the married group. In addition, there was a high significant positive relationship between the interventions conducted at two-week intervals (r=.79, p<.001). As a result, it was determined that the Mattering to Romantic Others Questionnaire adapted into Turkish is a valid and reliable measurement tool. The questionnaire is believed to be important for future research and will enable in-depth investigation of the relationships between mattering to romantic partner and romantic relationship dynamics and variables related to mental health.
