AbstractDetermination of Basic Health Behavior of the First and Sixth Grade Elementary School Students in Mersin Province: A School-Based Cross-Sectional Study Objective: It was aimed to determine the basic health behavior in the first and sixth grade elementary school students. Method: The research consisted of 765 students in the first and sixth grades of the three elementary schools, which are in the central district of Mersin Province. The students filled in the student questionnaire forms under the supervision of the researcher. By means of the questionnaire, socio-demographic information related to the students and their families, and basic health behaviors were asked. Results: 765 students (50.8% of them were female and 49.2% of them were male) participated in the research. 346 of them (45.2%) were first grade students and 419 of them (54.8%) were sixth grade students. It was determined that 29.3% of the students acquired the behaviors of general cleanliness, 55.9% of them acquired the behaviors of tooth cleaning, 52.2% of them acquired the behaviors of nourishment, 67.3% of them acquired the behaviors of adequate sleeping, 85.8% of them acquired the correct behavior and attitude related with smoking, 46.9% of them acquired the behaviors of knowing security phone numbers, 78.9% of the first grade students acquired the behavior of not sitting in the front seat of the car, and 65.4% of the sixth grade students acquired the behavior of using seat belt. Conclusion: It was found that the students\' basic health behaviors were not in sufficient level and the nursery school couldn\'t make the expected contribution. For this reason, it is suggested that both parent education and preschool education should be systematically constructed in terms of basic health behaviors. So, there should be an education in order to reinforce the basic health behaviors in the elementary school and the issues related with the basic health behaviors should be added to the curriculum and become a policy of the state.
