AbstractDetermination of Toxicity in Epithelial Cells of Buccal Mucosa of Smokers Objective: In the present study, the micronucleus test was applied in epithelial cells of buccal mucosa to assess the cytotoxicity induced by cigarette. Method:Therefore, donors were divided into two groups; as smokers and non-smokers. Micronucleus frequency was determined on “Feulgen/Fast Green”-stained smear preparations of epithelial cells obtained by scraping the surface of the buccal mucosa. Results: The mean percentage of micronucleated cells were significantly higher in smokers than in non-smokers (p<0.05). Besides, there was no difference between the mean percentage of micronucleated cells in female and male smokers and non-smokers (p>0.05). Conclusion: These findings suggest that micronucleus test may be used as a biological marker to determine the toxicicity induced by cigarette.
