AbstractSodium Pump, Endogenous Cardiac Glycosides and Their Role in the Pathophysiology of Several Diseases Na+,K+, ATP-ase, a membrane-bound enzyme, regulates cellular ion balance and cell volume. Cardiac glycosides are a class of compounds that specifically inhibit the NKA. These compounds have been shown to exist endogenously in mammalian plasma. Recent studies indicate that various diseases such as hypertension, preeclampsia, myocardial infarction, and diabetes mellitus have a significant relation to elevated concentrations of these compounds. Moreover, it has been shown that ouabain, one of the most studied cardiac glycosides, induced apoptotic cell death in various cancer cell lines. It has been considered that pharmacological modulation of the effect of endogenous cardiac glycosides could offer a novel way to develop new therapies.
