Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of cognitive level on pain perception in the elderly patients living at home with chronic musculoskeletal pain. Method: The study was conducted via face to face questionnaire interviews with 89 elderly living at home in Antalya. The pain intensity was measured and evaluated employing a Visual Analog Scale as well as Verbal Category Scale. In order to determine cognitive levels of the elderly the Standardized Mini Mental StateTest was used. Results: Average age (i.e. mean value) of the participants with chronic musculoskeletal pain was 71.6±4.0 years. The pain was most commonly located in the lower limbs and lumbar region. Average of Standardized Mini Mental State Test scores were 25.2±3.2. It was determined that men had better cognitive levels than women (p<0.001). Pain intensity during rest and activity have been found to be higher in women than in men (p<0.001). The correlation between the pain intensity values for the rest and activity states and the cognitive level was highly strong, but significantly negative (p=0.0001). Conclusion: The result of the study indicated that deterioration in cognitive functions caused more intensive pain perception. Our results pointed out that the influence of cognitive level on pain intensity should be taken into consideration while preparing a rehabilitation program of pain for elderly patients.
