İslâm tarihi çalışmaları kapsamında Mustafa Özkan tarafından kaleme alınan “İslâm Tarihi Araştırmaları ve Yazımında Usûl” adlı eser, İslâm tarihi çalışmalarının kapsamı, amacı, sınırlıkları ve araştırma usûlünü ele alan bir başvuru kitabıdır. Yazar, İslâm tarihi problemleri olarak tespit ettiği bilgi kirliliği ve usûl sorunlarına binaen hazırladığı bu eserin, İslâm tarihi araştırmacıları bilhassa da yüksek lisans ve doktora öğrencileri için rehberlik edeceği kanaatindedir. Yazar, eserinde İslâm tarihinin genel tarih içerisindeki konumunu ele alarak İslâm tarihi kavramına yönelik bir tanım yapmaktadır. Yazar, çalışmasında kavramsal analizlerden sonra İslâm tarihi yazıcılığının gelişim sürecini ele almakta ve İslâm tarihinin günümüz itibarıyla geldiği noktaya dair bir perspektif sunmaktadır. Kitapta İslâm tarihinin dönemlendirilmesinin gerekliliği, İslâm tarihi kaynakları, bu kaynakların kullanımı ve İslâm tarihinin problemleri konu edinilmektedir. Müellif, çalışmasında ele aldığı başlıkları örneklendirmek için ise İslâm tarihi kaynaklarından örnekler sunarak tespit ettiği problemlere yönelik çözümlemelerde bulunmaktadır. Yazar, İslâm tarihine yönelik bilgilendirmelerinden sonra İslâm tarihi araştırmalarının yöntemine dair bir usûl sunmaktadır. Özkan, eserinde akıcı ve açıklayıcı bir anlatım kullanmaktadır. Tarih alanında birçok usûl çalışması yapılmış olmasına binaen İslâm tarih araştırmaları ve yazımına yönelik metodolojik çalışmaların yetersizliği düşünüldüğünde eserin önemi ortaya çıkmaktadır.

Abstract
Within the scope of Islamic history studies, the work titled “Usûl in Islamic History Research and Writing,” written by Mustafa Özkan, is a reference book that addresses the scope, purpose, limitations, and research methodology of Islamic history studies. The author is of the opinion that this work, which he prepared on the basis of the problems of information pollution and methodological issues that he identifies as problems of Islamic history, will serve as a guide for Islamic history researchers, especially master’s and doctoral students.In his work, the author defines the concept of Islamic history by addressing the position of Islamic history within general history. Following conceptual analyses, the author discusses the development process of Islamic historiography and presents a perspective on the point Islamic history has reached as of today. The book deals with the necessity of periodization in Islamic history, the sources of Islamic history, the use of these sources, and the problems of Islamic history.In order to exemplify the topics discussed in his study, the author presents examples from Islamic historical sources and offers analyses directed toward the problems he has identified. After providing information on Islamic history, the author presents a methodological approach to Islamic history research. Throughout the work, Özkan employs a fluent and explanatory style. Considering that, despite the fact that many methodological studies have been conducted in the field of history, methodological studies on Islamic history research and writing remain insufficient, the importance of this work becomes evident.
