The Effect of Child Participation Focused Critical Thinking Education Program on Critical Thinking Skills in Children

Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of a critical thinking education program focused on child participation (COKEDEP) on preschool children's critical thinking skills and teachers' and children's views on child participation. The research is a mixed-methods study with a convergent design as the basic design and an intervention design as the advanced design. As quantitative data collection tools, the "Scale of Right to Participate in the Preschool Classroom" was used to assess participation in pre-test and post-test measurements for children in the intervention groups, and the "Critical Thinking Skills Test for 5–6-Year-Old Children" was used to assess critical thinking. Firstly, "Child Participation and Critical Thinking Skills in Early Childhood Education" in-service training was applied to the teachers by the first and third researchers, and then the teachers started the process of implementing the training program in their classrooms and continued for 6 weeks. As a qualitative data collection tool, semi-structured interviews were conducted with teachers before and after the training program and with parents after the training program. The study consisted of 60 children aged 4-5 years attending the Ministry of National Education Ankara Sincan Fatih Kindergarten, teachers (6) and parents of the children to be included in the study. Quantitative data were analyzed in an analysis package program. As a result of the analysis of the data, it was found that the data were normally distributed and the "Paired Samples T test" was applied to determine whether there was a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test mean scores. Qualitative data were analyzed by content analysis method. The results of the study showed that there was a significant difference between the mean scores of the pre-test and post-test and that COKEDEP enhanced both children's right to participation practices and their critical thinking skills. Critical thinking skills and child participation practices supported each other. Interviews with teachers and parents also supported the findings of the study.

Çocuk Katılım Odaklı Eleştirel Düşünme Eğitimi Programının Çocukların Eleştirel Düşünme Becerilerine Etkisi

Abstract

Bu araştırmada, çocuk katılımı odaklı eleştirel düşünme eğitim programının (ÇOKEDEP) okul öncesi dönem çocuklarının eleştirel düşünme becerileri ile öğretmenlerin ve çocukların çocuk katılımı konusundaki düşüncelerine etkisini incelemek amaçlanmıştır. Araştırma karma yöntem araştırması olup temel deseni birleştirici desen, ileri deseni müdahale desenidir. Araştırmada nicel veri toplama aracı olarak müdahale gruplarında yer alan çocuklara ön test ve son test ölçümlerinde katılımı değerlendirmek için “Okul Öncesi Sınıfında Katılım Hakkı Ölçeği”, eleştirel düşünmeyi değerlendirmek için “5-6 Yaş Çocuklar İçin Eleştirel Düşünme Becerileri Testi” kullanılmıştır. Öğretmenlere ilk olarak “Erken Çocukluk Eğitiminde Çocuk Katılımı ve Eleştirel Düşünme Becerileri” hizmet içi eğitimi araştırmacılar tarafından uygulanmış olup daha sonra öğretmenler sınıflarında eğitim programını uygulama sürecine başlamışlar ve 6 hafta devam etmişlerdir. Araştırmada nitel veri toplama aracı olarak eğitim programı öncesinde ve sonrasında öğretmenlerle, eğitim programı sonrasında ebeveynlerle yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler yapılmıştır. Araştırma, Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı Ankara Sincan Fatih Anaokuluna devam eden 4-5 yaş 60 çocuk, araştırmada yer alacak çocukların öğretmenleri (6) ve ebeveynlerinden oluşmaktadır. Nicel verilerin analizi bir analiz paket programında yapılmıştır. Verilerin analizi sonucunda normal dağıldığına ulaşılarak ön test ve son test puan ortalamaları arasında anlamlı bir farklılık olup olmadığını belirlemek amacıyla “Bağımlı Örneklemler İçin t Testi” uygulanmıştır. Nitel verilerin analizi içerik analizi yöntemiyle gerçekleştirilmiştir. Çalışmanın sonucu, ön test ve son test puan ortalamalarında anlamlı bir fark olduğu ve ÇOKEDEP’in hem çocukların katılım hakkı uygulamalarını hem de eleştirel düşünme becerilerini artırdığını göstermektedir Eleştirel düşünme becerileri ve çocuk katılımı uygulamaları birbirini desteklemiştir ve uygulamalarda iç içe yer almıştır. Öğretmen ve ebeveynlerle yapılan görüşmeler de araştırmanın bulgularını desteklemiştir.
