CONSIDERATIONS ON TURKISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE COURSES IN THE CONTEXT OF THE KNOWLEDGE SOCIETY FORMATION

Abstract

The fundamental objective of national education is to contribute to the overall development of society through the educational development of individuals. In the world of the 21st century where processing of information and producing knowledge are given more importance than mere accumulation of information, developed countries, while revising their educational objectives, emphasize educating individuals in the way they can contribute to the formation of the knowledge society. In this context, development of students’ cognitive skills and their becoming critically thinking, questioning and productive individuals are particularly foregrounded. In our country as well, the objectives of literature classes, just like the objectives of all other classes, cannot be considered independent of the dynamic objectives of education around the world or of the societal change our country has been experiencing under the effects of globalisation. In the general objectives of the currently used Turkish language and literature curriculum prepared by the Ministry of National Education, although such issues are briefly mentioned, there is insufficient guidance concerning the related concepts and their implementation. In the like manner, Turkish literature coursebooks do not seem to be providing effective methodology in this respect, either. For this reason, within the context of Turkish literature classes, the following article discusses the concepts, skills, methods and some of the problems that should be considered in a period of transition from traditional approaches to functional ones for the formation of the knowledge society.
