Tracks4Crafts: The Transmission of Crafts for the Future

Abstract

Tracks4Crafts is a research project that aims to promote the continuity and sustainability of crafts. The project, which will continue until 2027 under the coordination of the University of Antwerp in Belgium and is supported by the European Union Horizon Europe Program, is carried out by a structure consisting of fifteen partners from France, the Netherlands, Ireland, Spain, Switzerland, Italy, Iceland, Latvia, Romania and Greece, including universities, civil society organizations, open-air museums, skill-building business networks, research organizations and private companies (3D printer production). In addition, one person from Belgium, the Netherlands and Türkiye (Ahmet Erman Aral) supports the coordinating university in developing publication strategies, monitoring pilot applications and producing policy documents within the framework of their expertise as Advisory Board Members.

The main objective of the Tracks4Crafts project is to develop and transform the transmission of knowledge in this field in order to strengthen the economic and social value of traditional crafts within a future-oriented heritage approach. The combination of old craft techniques with cutting-edge technology offers new dimensions and opportunities for the preservation, re-functioning and distribution of cultural goods as well as new and high-quality products and services that promote ecological sustainability (reuse and use of renewable raw materials) and inclusiveness in the labor market. As its name suggests, the project progresses through four main tracks. The first of these focuses on education and learning (Tracks4Training). The main focus here is on the transformation of learning processes and apprenticeship forms in physical spaces (including those involving high technology). The second strand is linked to the development of new digital technologies that enrich and transform the transmission of traditional crafts knowledge (Tracks4Tech). The third strand of the project is related to the production of tools and instruments that enable the capturing and valorizing the market value of the traditional crafts knowledge produced (business modeling, certification, protection of ownership) (Tracks4Markets). The fourth strand is the creation of networks that increase and disseminate the social and economic value of traditional crafts knowledge and the support of the potential of crafts within the ecosystem (EUnite4Tracks). Tracks4Crafts consists of seven work packages: “project management”, “analysis of current applications”, “test platform”, “technology experimentation”, “experiment analysis”, “translation to to tools that support knowledge transmission” and “communicating project experience to the target audience and making it available for use”. In the project where the targets are spread over the short, medium and long term, issues such as the place, purpose and future of knowledge and skill transmission are examined within the scope of the master-apprentice relationship that progresses one-on-one in the workplace within the same crafts within the traditional framework, as well as how this relationship can be transformed in open environments (makerspaces) where people interested in certain fields gather and work creatively on concrete objects and in small-scale high-tech workshops (fablabs) that provide design and product development opportunities are also investigated through pilot applications. In addition to the relationship between people, the relationship between man-machine and man-space in crafts is also examined within this framework. The project also examines the transmission of knowledge and skills in different crafts between arts, the situation in non-traditional crafts, and the connection of crafts with the creative economy in a broad sense. Pilot cases addressing different materials, tools, environments, and techniques in eight countries in areas such as textile, wickerwork, woodworking, needlework, digital fabrication, ceramics, jewelry, silk weaving, and hybrid crafts based on welding metal materials with 3D printers are testing tools, means, and formats that help transmission of the knowledge and skills that give crafts its character. As an area of ​​intangible cultural heritage, craftsmanship is a resource that helps competitiveness, innovation, sustainable development, and improving the quality of life. However, the tools, means, and formats required to strengthen the transmission and employment of knowledge in this field cannot keep up with the process at the current point the world has reached, and therefore, the potential of crafts is hampered. Therefore, researching the craftsmanship tradition in this framework reveals a world of knowledge, traditions and possibilities that diversify our understanding of the past, present and future, while also providing an opportunity to rethink the perception, research and practices towards the craftsmanship tradition in Türkiye.

Tracks4Crafts Projesi: El Sanatlarının Geleceğe Aktarımı

Abstract

Tracks4Crafts el sanatlarının sürekliliğini ve sürdürülebilirliğini teşvik etmeyi amaçlayan bir araştırma projesidir. Belçika’daki Anvers Üniversitesinin koordinatörlüğünde 2027 yılına kadar devam edecek ve Avrupa Birliği Horizon Europe (Ufuk Avrupa Programı) kapsamında desteklenen proje Fransa, Hollanda, İrlanda, İspanya, İsviçre, İtalya, İzlanda, Letonya, Romanya ve Yunanistan’dan aralarında üniversite, sivil toplum kuruluşu, açık hava müzesi, beceri geliştirme odaklı iş ağı, araştırma kuruluşu ve özel şirketlerin (3 boyutlu yazıcı üretimi) bulunduğu on beş ortaklı bir yapı tarafından yürütülmektedir. Ayrıca Belçika, Hollanda ve Türkiye’den (Ahmet Erman Aral) birer kişi, Danışma Kurulu Üyesi olarak kendi uzmanlıkları çerçevesinde yayın stratejisi geliştirme, pilot uygulamaların takibi ve politika belgelerinin üretimi konusunda koordinatör üniversiteye destek olmaktadır.
Tracks4Crafts projesinin temel amacı, gelecek odaklı bir miras koruma yaklaşımı içinde geleneksel el sanatlarının ekonomik ve toplumsal değerini güçlendirme doğrultusunda bu alandaki bilginin aktarımının geliştirilmesi ve dönüştürülmesidir. Eski el sanatları tekniklerinin ileri teknolojiyle birleştirilmesi, kültürel malların yanı sıra ekolojik sürdürülebilirliği (yeniden kullanım ve yenilenebilir hammadde kullanımı) ve iş gücü piyasasında kapsayıcılığı teşvik eden yeni ve yüksek kaliteli ürün ve hizmetlerin korunması, yeniden işlev kazanması ve dağıtımı için yeni boyut ve fırsatlar sunmaktadır.
Proje, adından anlaşılacağı üzere dört ana hat üzerinden ilerlemektedir. Bunlardan ilki eğitim ve öğrenme odaklıdır (Tracks4Training). Buradaki temel bakış, öğrenme süreçlerinin ve (yüksek teknoloji içerenler de dâhil olmak üzere) fiziksel mekânlardaki çıraklık biçimlerinin dönüştürülmesiyle ilgilidir. İkinci boyut, geleneksel el sanatları bilgisinin aktarımını zenginleştiren ve dönüştüren yeni dijital teknolojilerin geliştirilmesiyle bağlantılıdır (Tracks4Tech). Projenin üçüncü kulvarı ise üretilen geleneksel el sanatları bilgisinin piyasa değerinin saptanmasını sağlayan araç ve vasıtaların üretilmesi (iş modellemesi, sertifikasyon, mülkiyetin korunması) ile ilgilidir (Tracks4Markets). Dördüncü ana hat ise geleneksel el sanatları bilgisinin toplumsal ve ekonomik değerini artıran ve yayan ağların oluşturulması, el sanatlarının ekosistem içindeki potansiyelinin desteklenmesidir (EUnite4Tracks). Tracks4Crafts; “proje yönetimi”, “mevcut uygulamaların analizi”, “deneme platformu”, “teknoloji denemesi”, “deneme analizi”, “araştırma sonuçlarının bilgi aktarımını destekleyecek araçlara nakledilmesi” ve “proje deneyiminin hedef kitleye iletilmesi ve kullanıma sunulması” olmak üzere yedi iş paketinden oluşmaktadır.
Hedeflerin kısa, orta ve uzun vadeye yayıldığı projede bilgi ve beceri aktarımının mekânı, amacı ve mekânların geleceği gibi konular aynı el sanatı içinde geleneksel çerçevede iş yerinde teke tek ilerleyen usta çırak ilişkisi kapsamında incelendiği gibi, bu ilişkinin belirli alanlara ilgi duyan kişilerin toplanıp somut objeler üzerinde yaratıcı biçimde çalıştıkları açık ortamlarda (makerspace) ve tasarım ve ürün geliştirme imkânı sağlayan ufak çaplı yüksek teknolojiye sahip atölyelerde (fablab) nasıl dönüştürülebileceği gibi hususlar da pilot uygulamalar aracılığıyla araştırılmaktadır. Ayrıca, insanlar arası ilişkiye ek olarak el sanatlarında insan-makine, insan-mekân ilişkisi de bu çerçevede incelenmektedir. Farklı el sanatlarındaki bilgi ve becerilerin sanatlar arası aktarımı, geleneksel sayılmayan el sanatlarındaki durumun irdelenmesi ve geniş anlamda el sanatlarının yaratıcı ekonomiyle bağlantısı da projenin inceleme alanındadır.
Sekiz ülkede tekstil, ahşap, dikiş, dijital imalat, seramik, kuyumculuk, ipek dokuma ve 3D yazıcıyla metal malzemelerin kaynaklanmasına dayalı hibrit el sanatı gibi alanlarda farklı malzeme, araç, ortam ve tekniklere hitap eden pilot uygulamalarla, el sanatlarının yanı sıra ona karakterini veren bilgi ve becerilerin kuşaktan kuşağa aktarımına yardımcı alet, vasıta ve formatlar test edilmektedir. Somut olmayan kültürel mirasın bir alanı olarak el sanatları geleneği rekabet, yenilik, sürdürülebilir kalkınma ve yaşam kalitesinin artırılmasına yardımcı bir kaynaktır. Bununla birlikte, bu alandaki bilginin aktarım ve kullanımını güçlendirmek için gereken alet, vasıta ve formatlar dünyanın geldiği güncel noktada sürece ayak uyduramamakta ve bu nedenle, el sanatlarının potansiyeli sekteye uğramaktadır. Dolayısıyla el sanatları geleneğinin bu çerçevede araştırılması geçmiş, günümüz ve geleceğe ilişkin anlayışımızı çeşitlendiren bir bilgi, gelenek ve imkânlar dünyasını ortaya çıkarırken Türkiye’de el sanatları geleneğine yönelik algı, araştırma ve uygulamaların çerçevesini yeniden düşünme fırsatı da sunmaktadır.
