Abstract

Abstract

The rapid changes in technology continue to affect people. The interest in smartphones and their lifespan can be preserved throughout this period and as the benefits of rich technologies. Being interested in the phone, neglecting the other person is classified as phubbing. The technological characteristics of people seen in these behaviors are increasing day by day and this situation is living without their own values with access to digital devices. The fact that the interest in phones changes day by day and that it negatively affects parent-child communication and children's behaviors is among the issues that should be emphasized. In this context, this research aimed to examine the impact of adolescents' perceived parental phubbing on their digital addictions and prosocial behaviors. The study involved a sample of 350 students aged 15-17, selected using convenience sampling methods, from high schools in the Zeytinburnu district of Istanbul during the 2023-2024 academic year. The research utilized the ‘‘Demographic Information Form’’, ‘‘Perceived Parental Phubbing Scale (PPPS)’’, ‘‘The Digital Addiction Scale For Teenagers (DAS)’’ and ‘‘Adolescent Prosociality Scale (APS)’’ as data collection instruments. Normality analysis was conducted to examine the distribution characteristics of the data, revealing that the data exhibited normal distribution. Simple linear regression analysis was employed to determine the impact of the independent variable on the dependent variables. The results of the analyses indicated that adolescents' perceived parental phubbing predicts their digital addictions and prosocial behaviors. The findings were discussed and evaluated in line with relevant literature in the field.
