Determination of the performance of Coriandrum sativum var. microcarpum DC. and Coriandrum sativum var. macrocarpum under summer and winter sowing conditions

Abstract

This study was conducted in the province of Diyarbakır, Türkiye, to evaluate the agronomic performance and essential oil compositions of two different coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) varieties (Denizli and Mardin) under winter and summer sowing conditions. The main traits investigated included seed yield, plant height, plant canopy diameter, 1000-seed weight, biological yield, harvest index, essential oil content, and essential oil components. Both varieties adapted well to the agroecological conditions of the region. The Denizli variety exhibited superior performance, particularly under winter sowing conditions, with higher cold tolerance, a longer vegetative period, increased plant height, and a higher essential oil content (0.50%). Although linalool content was high in both varieties, it was higher in the Denizli variety (90.42%), indicating its greater suitability for industrial use and fresh consumption. Under summer sowing conditions, the Mardin variety outperformed the Denizli variety due to its shorter vegetation period, sensitivity to cold, and higher harvest index. These findings indicate that the Denizli variety is more suitable for cultivation under winter sowing conditions, whereas the Mardin variety is more appropriate for summer sowing, particularly in regions with climatic conditions similar to those of Diyarbakır.
