Competitiveness of Türkiye in the global animal, vegetable oils and waxes market: Comparative evidence Balassa and net export index

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the export competitiveness of Türkiye and the five leading exporters of animal and vegetable fats, oils and waxes - Argentina, Indonesia, Spain, Malaysia and the Netherlands - from a comparative perspective. The study also aims to develop a roadmap for Türkiye’s import and export policies based on the analysis’s findings. To this end, export and import values for these countries between 2005 and 2024 were obtained from the WITS (World Integrated Trade Solution) database. Analyses were conducted using the Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) method for three sub-product groups of animal and vegetable fats, oils and waxes within the “4- Animal/veg oil/fat/wax” product group of SITC Rev. 3. According to the Balassa Index, Indonesia and Malaysia have a competitive advantage in product group 4313 “Monocarboxylic fatty acids used in industry, as well as degreasing, wax residues, etc.”, while Spain has a competitive advantage in product group 4214 “Olive oil and its fractions”. The Net Export Index results show that Argentina has achieved export specialisation in all sub-product groups; Indonesia and Malaysia have achieved this in the 4313 sub-product group; Netherlands have achieved this in the 4113 “Animal oil/(fatness)” and 4313 sub-product groups; Spain have achieved this in the 4113 and 4214 sub-product groups; and Türkiye have achieved this in the 4214 sub-product group.
