The representation of women in Kate Chopin's The Awakening and a comparative analysis of its Turkish translations

Abstract

Written in the late 1800s by Kate Chopin, The Awakening, was criticized after its publication because of the controversial subjects it handled. Consigned to the dusty shelves of history along with Kate Chopin's other works, The Awakening is now considered a classic not only of feminist literature but of world literature, after its rediscovery in the 1960s. Chopin, who gathered most of her subjects from the Louisiana Creole culture, mainly depicted women characters who struggle to discover themselves and assert their individuality as persons. The protagonist in The Awakening, Edna Pontellier, is such a woman who unknowingly goes on a quest to find her identity by living the very ‘awakening’ of the novel’s title. The psychological, individual and sexual awakening that Edna experiences is the main reason for the criticism of Chopin’s particular work. Even though she searches for independence, Edna is constrained by society’s expectations of traditional female roles and is faced with strong discouragement from her family and friends. The discourse about women’s rights in the 19th century was under tremendous change, however, the dominant idea of society was that a woman’s place was the domestic sphere of her marital home. The aim of this research is to analyze the discourse about women’s rights as handled in The Awakening and examine the peculiarities of this discourse in the three Turkish translations of the novel, all named “Uyanış”, and translated by Necla Aytür, Burcu Şahinli and Suat Ertüzün. In the analysis of the source text, the components of discourse analysis suggested by Norman Fairclough, such as intertextuality, presupposition and negation, were taken as basis, and in the analysis of the translations, the differences between the source text and the selected target texts were evaluated through the Systematics of Designification in Translation developed by Sündüz Öztürk Kasar.

Kate Chopin’in Uyanış eserinde kadının temsiliyeti ve Türkçe çevirilerinin karşılaştırmalı incelemesi

Abstract

1800’lü yılların sonlarında Kate Chopin tarafından yazılan Uyanış, ele aldığı tartışmalı konular sebebiyle yayınlandığı dönemde oldukça eleştirilmiş bir romandır. Chopin’in diğer eserleriyle birlikte tarihin tozlu raflarına kaldırılan Uyanış, 1960’larda yeniden keşfedilmesiyle günümüzde yalnızca feminist edebiyatın değil tüm dünya edebiyatının klasik eserlerinden sayılmaktadır. İşlediği konuları çoğunlukla Louisiana Kreol kültüründen seçen Chopin genel olarak, kendi benliklerini bulmak ve bireyselliklerini vurgulamak için mücadele eden kadın karakterlere yazınında yer vermiştir. Uyanış’ın başkahramanı Edna Pontellier tam da böyle bir karakterdir ve eserin adındaki uyanışı gerçek anlamıyla yaşayarak farkında olmadan kendi kimliğini keşfetme yoluna girer. Edna’nın yaşadığı psikolojik, bireysel ve cinsel uyanış, Chopin’in bu eserinin eleştiri almasının temel sebebidir. Edna her ne kadar bağımsızlığını bulmaya çalışsa da hem toplumun kendisinden beklediği ‘kadınlık’ görevleri hem de ailesi ve arkadaşlarının sert tepkileri sebebiyle toplumsal baskı ile kısıtlanmaktadır. 19. yüzyılda kadın hakları ile ilgili söylemler büyük bir değişime uğramıştır ancak toplumdaki egemen düşünce, kadının yerinin daima evi olduğu yönündedir. Bu araştırmanın amacı, Uyanış eserinde işlenen kadın hakları söylemini çözümlemek ve eserin hem kaynak metninde hem de Necla Aytür, Burcu Şahinli ve Suat Ertüzün tarafından gerçekleştirilen üç Türkçe çeviride bu söylemin dilsel özelliklerini incelemektir. Kaynak metnin incelenmesinde Norman Fairclough’un öne sürdüğü söylem çözümlemesi bileşenlerinden metinlerarasılık, önsayıltı ve olumsuzlama temel alınmış, çevirilerin çözümlenmesinde ise kaynak metin ile seçilen hedef metinler arasındaki farklılıklar, Sündüz Öztürk Kasar tarafından geliştirilen Çeviride Anlam Evrilmesi Dizgeselliği üzerinden değerlendirilmiştir.
