The Final Journeys Of Kâmrân Mîrzâ And Salîma Arghun

Abstract

Babur Shah, the founder of the Mughal dynasty, appointed his eldest son Humāyūn as heir just before he died in 1530. Humāyūn soon entered a struggle for the throne with his brothers. His most potent rival was the eldest one, Kāmrān. After a long and arduous conflict, Humāyūn eliminated and blinded him in the 1550s. Subsequently, Kāmrān gave up the struggle and went to the Holy Lands with the intention of pilgrimage, where he evetually died. History books covering this period indicate that he went on pilgrimage in 1554, accompanied by his wife Māh Chuchak, and she is said to have died in 1557 or 1558, after Kāmrān’s death. However, two archival records from the Ottoman Archives of the Turkish State Archives necessitate a revision of this account. This study reveals that Kāmrān’s wife, who travelled to the Hejaz, was actually named Salīma and died before her husband in 1555. Additionally, it is confirmed that Kāmrān received permission from the Ottoman Empire to perform hajj in 1556. Furthermore, this study offers an intimate exploration of Salīma’s life in Mecca, delving into her social network and personal wealth, while also examining her private tastes and the circumstances surrounding her death.
