The Relationship Between Perceived Parental Attitudes and Intercultural Sensitivity Levels of Middle School Students

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between secondary school students' perceptions of parental attitudes and their intercultural sensitivity levels. The data of the study, conducted using a correlational survey model, collected from 605 secondary school students in the central districts of Van Province. Parental Attitude Scale and the Intercultural Sensitivity Scale for Adolescents were used as data collection tools in the study. In addition to descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation analysis, and stepwise regression analysis were used in the analysis of the data. The results of the study revealed that the democratic attitude of the students' parents was high, their protective/permissive attitude was moderate, and their authoritarian attitude was low. It was also found that the students' level of intercultural sensitivity was high. The study concluded that male students' parents exhibited more protective/demanding and authoritarian attitudes, democratic attitudes increased with higher education levels, female students had higher levels of intercultural sensitivity, and students whose parents had higher education levels also had higher levels of intercultural sensitivity. The study found significant relationships between parental attitudes and intercultural sensitivity; democratic attitudes were positively related, while authoritarian attitudes were negatively related. Finally, democratic and authoritarian attitudes were found to be meaningful predictors of intercultural sensitivity. The results obtained demonstrate the effect of parent attitudes on the development of cultural sensitivity in students
