John Snow ve Broad Caddesi’ndeki Su Pompası

Abstract

Amaç: John Snow, XIX. yüzyıl İngiltere'sinde yaşamış, anestezi ve epidemiyoloji alanında öncü olan önemli bir figürdür. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Snow'un tıp tarihindeki önemini ve koleranın su kaynaklı olduğunu savunduğu epidemiyolojik çalışmasının önemini ortaya koymaktır. Yöntem: Çalışmada, konuyla ilgili literatür sistematik biçimde incelenmiş, John Snow’un yaşamı ve bilimsel katkıları hakkında veriler toplanmış ve elde edilen veriler doğrultusunda değerlendirme yapılmıştır. Bulgular: John Snow, anestezi alanında klinik uygulamalar geliştirmiş ve üst solunum yollarına ilişkin araştırmalar gerçekleştirmiştir. Londra’da 1854 yılında gerçekleşen kolera salgını sırasında yaptığı ayrıntılı gözlemler sonucunda hastalığın solunum yoluyla değil, kontamine su ile bulaştığını savunmuştur. Soho bölgesindeki oluşan vakaları inceleyerek harita çıkarmış ve Broad Street’teki bir su pompasının salgının kaynağı olduğunu tespit etmiştir. Pompanın kapatılmasının ardından vaka sayılarında belirgin bir azalma yaşanmış ve koleraya bağlı ölümler kayda değer biçimde düşmüştür. Sonuç: Bu çalışmalar, epidemiyoloji bilimine büyük katkılar sağlamış ve su kaynaklı hastalıkların kontrolünde önemli bir dönüm noktası olmuştur. Bu dönüm noktasının tıp tarihine katkısı büyüktür.

John Snow and the Water Pump in Broad Street

Abstract

Objective: John Snow was a prominent figure in 19th-century England who pioneered the fields of anesthesia and epidemiology. The objective of this study is to highlight Snow's importance in the history of medicine and the significance of his epidemiological work arguing that cholera was waterborne. Method: In this study, the relevant literature was systematically reviewed, data on John Snow's life and scientific contributions were collected, and an evaluation was made based on the data obtained. Results: John Snow developed clinical practices in the field of anesthesia and conducted research on the upper respiratory tract. During the cholera epidemic in London in 1854, his detailed observations led him to argue that the disease was transmitted not through the respiratory tract but through contaminated water. By examining the cases that occurred in the Soho area, he mapped them and identified a water pump on Broad Street as the source of the outbreak. After the pump was shut down, there was a significant decrease in the number of cases, and cholera-related deaths dropped considerably. Conclusion: This work made a major contribution to the science of epidemiology and was an important turning point in the control of waterborne diseases. This turning point made a significant contribution to the history of medicine.
