Sağlıkla İlgili Mesleklerde Kullanılan Amblemlerin Tarihçesi ve Anlamları Üzerine Bir Değerlendirme

Abstract

Amblem, Türk Dil Kurumuna göre bir kavramın, soyut bir şeyin sembolü olan varlık; belirtke anlamına gelmektedir. Sağlıkla ilgili meslek alanlarının kendine özgü amblemlerinin olduğu bilinmektedir. Sağlıkla ilgili amblemler, tıp amblemi dahil olmak üzere bir dizi tarihi ve etik değeri temsil etmektedir. Bu derlemenin amacı sağlıkla ilgili mesleklerden tıp, diş hekimliği, eczacılık, hemşirelik ve veterinerlik meslek amblemlerinin tarihçelerinin araştırılması ve hangi anlamları ifade ettiklerinin incelenmesidir. Bu amaçla sağlıkla ilgili meslek kurumları, kuruluşları, dernekler ve meslek birliklerinden Dünya Sağlık Örgütü, Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Sağlık Bakanlığı, Tük Tabipleri Birliği, Türk Diş Hekimleri Birliği, Türk Eczacıları Birliği, Türk Hemşireler Derneği ve Türk Veteriner Hekimleri Birliği’nin güncel olarak kullandığı amblemler incelenmiştir. Amblemlere genel olarak bakıldığında çok sayıda ortak sembolün, mitolojik ve tarihi figürlerin kullanıldığı görülmektedir. Hemşirelik mesleği hariç olmak üzere tüm meslek amblemlerinde “yılan” figürünün yer aldığı gözlenmektedir. Hemşirelik mesleğinin güncel ambleminde de tarihi bir figür yer almaktadır. Amblemlerin tarihçelerinin ve sembolize ettiği anlamların bilinmesinin etik, mesleki ve profesyonel değerlerin günümüzde tüm sağlık çalışanlarınca yaşatılması için önemli olduğunu düşünüyoruz.

An Evaluation on The History and Meanings of Emblems Used in Health-related Professions

Abstract

According to the Turkish Language Association, the emblem is defined as an entity that symbolizes an abstract concept or idea; in other words, a sign or insignia. It is known that professional fields related to health possess certain distinctive emblems of their own. Health-related emblems, including the medical emblem, represent a range of historical and ethical values. The aim of this review is to investigate the historical backgrounds of the emblems belonging to health-related professions—specifically medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, and veterinary medicine—and to examine the meanings they convey. For this purpose, the emblems currently used by health-related professional institutions, organizations, associations, and unions, including the World Health Organization, the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Turkey, the Turkish Medical Association, the Turkish Dental Association, the Turkish Pharmacists Association, the Turkish Nurses Association, and the Turkish Veterinary Association, were examined. A general examination of the emblems reveals the use of numerous common symbols and mythological and historical figures. With the exception of nursing, the “snake” figure appears in all occupational emblems. The current emblem of the nursing profession also features a historical figure. We believe that knowing the history of emblems and the meanings they symbolize is important for all healthcare professionals to maintain ethical, professional and moral values.
