Asû ve Āšipu Perspektifinden Çivi Yazılı Belgelerde Gece Körlüğü ve Bulanık Görme

Abstract

Amaç: Kil tabletler üzerine çivi yazısı kullanılarak tutulan kayıtlardan binlercesi günümüze ulaşmıştır. Bu kayıtlarda çeşitli hastalıklar ve bunların tedavi yöntemleri de yer almaktadır. Çalışmada metinlerde bahsedilen “Gece Körlüğü ve Bulanık Görme” rahatsızlıkları ve bununla ilgili tedavi yöntemleri modern anlamda doktora veya eczacıya karşılık gelen Asû ile büyücü/kâhin niteliği taşıyan Āšipu adlı görevlilerin bakış açısından incelenecektir. Yöntem: Bu araştırma 11.10.2025-14.02.2026 tarihleri arasında yapılmıştır. Çalışmada MÖ I. binyıla ait çivi yazılı kaynaklardan ve bunlara dayalı olarak oluşturulan modern bilimsel literatürden istifade edilmiştir. Bulgular: Çivi yazılı metinlerde Sinlurma (Gece Körlüğü), Apû (Bulanık Görme) olarak geçen göz rahatsızlıkları incelenecektir. Aynı zamanda konuyla ilgili en erken kayıtlar modern dünyadan örneklerle kıyaslanmaya çalışılacaktır. Sonuç: Göz hastalıklarına dair kayıtların incelenmesi sonucu IGI Serisi olarak isimlendirilen bir külliyatın oluştuğu görülmüştür. Bu kayıtlarda geçen IGI ifadesi Sumerce “göz” anlamına gelirken bunun Akadca karşılığının īnū olduğu anlaşılmıştır. Göz hastalığı terimi ise Sumerce IGI GIG, Akadca “muruṣ īnī” olarak ifade edilmiştir. Gözleri rahatsız olan kişilerin durumu ise “šumma amēlu īnāšu marṣā/eğer bir adamın gözleri hasta ise” şeklinde kalıplaşmış bir cümle ile kayıt altına alınmıştır. Hastalıkların tedavisinde ise modern anlamda doktor veya eczacıya benzetebileceğimiz Asû ile bir çeşit kâhin olarak tarif edilen Āšipu adındaki görevlilerin ön plana çıktığı anlaşılmıştır. Āšipu’lar “magical ritüller”, Asû’lar ise “medical yöntemler” kullanmıştır. Bu kişileri, faaliyetlerine binaen dönemin sağlık görevlileri olarak nitelendirebiliriz.

Night Blindness and Blurred Vision in Cuneiform Documents from the Perspectives of the Asû and the Āšipu

Abstract

Objective: Thousands of records inscribed in cuneiform on clay tablets have survived to the present day. These records encompass various diseases and their respective treatment methods. This study examines the conditions of night blindness and blurred vision as documented in the texts, along with their respective treatment methodologies, from the dual perspectives of the Asû (the ancient equivalent of a physician or pharmacist) and the Āšipu (the exorcist or incantation priest). Method: The study utilizes cuneiform sources dating back to the 1st millennium BCE, as well as the modern scientific literature derived from these primary records. Results: The eye disorders referred to in cuneiform texts as Sinlurma (Night Blindness) and Apû (Blurred Vision) will be examined. Furthermore, these earliest records on the subject will be comparatively analyzed with examples from the modern world. Conclusion: The examination of records pertaining to eye diseases reveals the existence of a corpus designated as the IGI Series. It is understood that the expression IGI in these records signifies "eye" in Sumerian, while its Akkadian equivalent is īnū. The term for eye disease is expressed as IGI GIG in Sumerian and muruṣ īnī in Akkadian. The condition of individuals with ocular ailments was recorded using the formulaic phrase: “šumma amēlu īnāšu marṣā / if a man’s eyes are diseased.” In the treatment of these conditions, two types of practitioners emerge: the Asû, who corresponds to the modern physician or pharmacist, and the Āšipu, described as a type of diviner or exorcist. While the Āšipu employed magical rituals, the Asû utilized medical methods.
