Potential Effects of Essential Oils on Attention and Concentration: A Literature-Based Review of Aromatherapy

Abstract

Introduction: Essential oils are complex mixtures of volatile plant secondary metabolites containing concentrated aromatic constituents. Experimental research on olfactory stimulation and cognition suggests that these compounds may modulate relaxation, mood, alertness, attention, and memory. Aim: This review aimed to evaluate the potential effects of essential oils on attention and concentration and to summarize the methodological limitations of the current aromatherapy literature. Method: A structured literature search was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, and TR Dizin for studies published up to 2025 using combinations of terms related to essential oils or aromatherapy and attention, concentration, alertness, vigilance, and memory. Human studies with objective cognitive outcomes were synthesized thematically according to cognitive domains. Findings: Evidence was organized under four domains: alertness and arousal, selective attention and processing speed, sustained attention and mental fatigue, and the memory–attention interface. Peppermint and rosemary aromas were more commonly associated with increased alertness and aspects of memory performance, although gains in one parameter were sometimes accompanied by slower responses. Lavender appeared to attenuate performance decline during prolonged tasks rather than acting as a stimulant. Sage (Salvia) species, studied mostly through oral administration, have been linked to memory and attention through putative cholinergic mechanisms. Across domains, effects were moderated by chemotype, dose, exposure duration, route of administration, odor hedonics, and expectancy. Conclusion: Essential oils should not be considered stand-alone therapeutic agents for improving attention and concentration. Rather, they may be regarded as adjunctive environmental olfactory stimuli that could support cognitive performance under appropriate conditions.
