Beyaz Önlüğün Anlamı Üzerine Bir Konuşma Metni

Abstract

Beyaz önlük töreni, henüz meslekten olmayan bir kişinin hekimliğe girişini ve sağlık mesleğinin bir üyesine dönüşümünü simgeleyen ritüel olarak tanımlanabilir. Tören ilk kez 1989 yılında bir toplantı formatında Chicago Üniversitesi Pritzker Tıp Fakültesi’nde ortaya çıkmıştır. Törende beyaz önlük verilen öğrencilere, fakültede hastalar da bulunduğu için profesyoneller gibi görünmeleri, beyaz önlük giymeleri ve rollerine uygun şekilde davranmaları istendiği belirtilmiş ve böylece beyaz önlük töreninin temeli atılmıştır. İlk organize beyaz önlük töreni ise 1993 yılında Columbia Üniversitesi Doktorlar ve Cerrahlar Koleji’nde gerçekleşmiştir. Böylece, tıp eğitiminin en başında tıpta hümanizmi vurgulamanın bir yolu olarak Beyaz önlük törenleri yapılmaya başlanmış ve giderek geleneksel hale gelmiştir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Aydın Adnan Menderes Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi’nde 2024 yılında düzenlenen Beyaz Önlük Töreni’nde “Beyaz Önlüğün Anlamı” ile ilgili yaptığım konuşma metnini tanıtmaktır. Konuşma metni ülkemizin değerleri ile hekimlik mesleğinin insani, etik, toplumsal ve psikolojik boyutlarını bir araya getiren bir metindir. Empati, diğerkamlık, yardımseverlik, iyilik, fedakarlık, şefkat ve merhamet gibi doktorluğun profesyonel değerleri göz önüne alınarak yazılmış metnin, bundan sonra düzenlenecek Beyaz önlük törenlerinde okunabileceği düşüncesindeyim.

A Speech on the Meaning of the White Coat

Abstract

The white coat ceremony can be defined as the ritual that symbolizes the entry of a lay person into medicine and his transformation into a member of the healthcare profession. The white coat ceremony first emerged in 1989 at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. It was stated that the students who were given white coats at the ceremony were asked to look like professionals, wear white coats and behave in accordance with their roles since there were patients in the faculty, and thus the foundation of the white coat ceremony was laid. The first organized white coat ceremony took place in 1993 at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Thus, white coat ceremonies began to be held as a way to emphasize humanism in medicine at the very beginning of medical education and gradually became a tradition. The purpose of this study is to introduce the text of my speech about “The Meaning of the White Coat” at the White Coat Ceremony held at Aydın Adnan Menderes University Faculty of Medicine in 2024. The speech text is a text that brings together the values of our country and the human, ethical, social and psychological dimensions of the medical profession. I think that the text, written taking into account the professional values of medicine such as empathy, altruism, helpfulness, kindness, devotion, compassion and mercy, can be read at the White coat ceremonies to be held from now on.
