The Machine’s Voice and Gaze: Discipline, Inscription, and Heterotopia in “Afrika Dansı”

Abstract

This article examines resistance in Sevim Burak’s short story “Afrika Dansı” (1982) through close reading of its typographic and acoustic organization. It draws on Michel Foucault’s accounts of disciplinary power and the production of the case, Connell and Messerschmidt’s concept of hegemonic masculinity, and Robert J. Topinka’s reframing of Foucauldian heterotopia into textual heterotopia. The article argues that the narrator’s resistance to medical authority does not constitute escape or emancipation. Instead, it emerges through questioning, writing, masking, dance, memory, and shifting African geographies while her body remains subject to medical intervention. Burak’s fragmented typography and competing sounds create a heterotopic textual surface on which clinical, autobiographical, imaginative, and ethnographic forms of knowledge interrupt and transform one another. Building on Seher Özkök’s feminist account of normalization and patriarchal authority, while differing from Fatih Altuğ’s reading of the story through machinic assemblage and Merve Şen’s emphasis on writing, desire, and medical experience, this study focuses on how clinical classification itself becomes textually unstable. It argues that resistance in “Afrika Dansı” operates by unsettling the classificatory ground through which medical knowledge attempts to organize the patient as a coherent case.
