Adaptation in Turkish Literature, Cinema and Media: Seda Öz and Taner Can (eds.), Palgrave Macmillan, 2025. 241 pp.: ISBN 9783031744457
Abstract
This review critically engages with a recent publication in adaptation studies, namely Adaptation in Turkish Literature, Cinema and Media (2025), edited by Seda Öz and Taner Can and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This edited volume comprises thirteen chapters grouped into three parts: Transnational Adaptations, Popular Culture Adaptations, and Culture, Theory, and Adaptation. Spanning a wide historical period and diverse media formats, the collection explores Turkish adaptation practices, emphasizing the country’s unique position as an ‘in-between’ space and its negotiation of transnational influences. Key concepts such as ‘Turkification’ and ‘localization’ are discussed as central frameworks, while the book’s structure foregrounds the methodological and conceptual diversity of the field. The review assesses the volume’s strengths and limitations, noting its significance as a reference for future scholarship and its contribution to broadening adaptation studies beyond an Anglo-American focus.
