Examining the relationship between school administrators’ social media usage competencies and their digital citizenship levels

Abstract

Social media usage competence and interacting with digital communication tools correctly, in accordance with ethical standards and effectively are related to awareness of digital citizenship. It is important for school administrators to have these competencies for effective schools. The aim of the study was to determine the social media usage competence and digital citizenship levels of school administrators and to examine the relationship between them. The participants of the study, which was conducted according to the relational survey model, one of the quantitative research methods, consisted of 325 school administrators in Bursa in the 2024-2025 academic year. Data of the research were collected with the “Social Media Usage Scale” and the “Digital Citizenship Scale”. Frequency, percentage and arithmetic mean values were calculated in the analyzes; the relationships between social media usage competence and digital citizenship level were evaluated by calculating the Pearson Correlation Coefficient. According to the results, it was determined that the social media usage competence and digital citizenship levels of school administrators were high. In addition, it was determined that the relationship between school administrators’ social media usage competence and digital citizenship levels was moderate, positive and significant. It was also found that there were significant relationships between the sub-dimensions of social media usage competence and digital citizenship level.

Abstract

Sosyal medya kullanım yeterliği ve dijital iletişim araçlarıyla doğru, etik standartlara uygun ve etkin bir şekilde etkileşim kurulması, dijital vatandaşlığa yönelik sahip olunan bilinçle ilgilidir. Etkili okulların varlığı açısından bu yeterliklerin okul yöneticilerinde bulunması önemlidir. Araştırmada okul yöneticilerinin sosyal medya kullanım yeterlikleri ile dijital vatandaşlık düzeylerinin belirlenmesi ve aralarındaki ilişkinin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Nicel araştırma yöntemlerinden ilişkisel tarama modeline göre yürütülen araştırmanın katılımcılarını 2024-2025 eğitim-öğretim yılında Bursa’daki 325 okul yöneticisi oluşturmuştur. Araştırmanın verileri “Sosyal Medya Kullanımı Ölçeği” ve “Dijital Vatandaşlık Ölçeği” ile toplanmıştır. Analizlerde frekans, yüzde ve aritmetik ortalama değerleri hesaplanmış; sosyal medya kullanım yeterliği ile dijital vatandaşlık düzeyi arasındaki ilişkiler Pearson Korelasyon Katsayısı hesaplanarak değerlendirilmiştir. Sonuçlara göre okul yöneticilerinin sosyal medya kullanım yeterlikleri ve dijital vatandaşlık düzeylerinin yüksek olduğu belirlenmiştir. Ayrıca okul yöneticilerinin sosyal medya kullanım yeterlikleri ile dijital vatandaşlık düzeyleri arasındaki ilişkinin orta düzeyde, pozitif yönde ve anlamlı olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Sosyal medya kullanım yeterliği ve dijital vatandaşlık düzeyine ait alt boyutlar arasında da anlamlı ilişkiler bulunmuştur.
