Privacy and Religiosity on Social Media: The Reinterpretation of Religious Practices in the Public Sphere
Abstract
Digitalization has significantly altered the concepts of privacy and religiosity. Religious practices, once primarily private and introspective, are now increasingly shared through visually oriented and interactive platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok. This shift has led to the aestheticization and public performance of faith, challenging traditional boundaries between the sacred and the secular, the private and the public. This study investigates how social media reshapes individuals’ perceptions of privacy and religiosity. It addresses the central research question: How does the visualization of religious practices on social media transform perceptions of privacy? Using a qualitative content analysis approach, the study examines selected digital religious content through the theoretical lenses of Erving Goffman’s “presentation of self,” Guy Debord’s “society of the spectacle,” and Zygmunt Bauman’s “liquid modernity.” Findings reveal that religious practices have evolved into curated identity performances designed for visibility and engagement. Privacy is no longer a static personal domain but is strategically managed and publicly performed. Digital religiosity thus emerges as a hybrid form of spiritual expression—part devotion, part spectacle—shaped by the aesthetics and logics of platform culture. By situating digital religious expression within broader sociological theories, this research contributes to understanding how faith, identity, and privacy are reconfigured in the digital age. The study offers a nuanced perspective on the mediated transformation of religious life in contemporary society.
