Peter Heather’ın “Gotlar” Kitabı Üzerine Bir İnceleme

Abstract

Türkçe literatürde Got tarihi üzerine çalışmalar gün geçtikçe artmaktadır. İngilizce ve Almanca başta olmak üzere Got ve Germen tarihi üzerine yapılan eserlerin Türkçe tercümelerindeki yükseliş, bu alan üzerine ülkemizde yapılan çalışmalara ilginin yoğunlaştığını gösteren bir etkendir. Bu bağlamda İngiliz tarihçi Peter Heather tarafından 1996 yılında İngilizce kaleme alınan The Goths eserinin 2012 yılında Erkan Avcı tarafından dilimize yapılan çevirisi, Got tarihi bağlamında Türkçe literatüre büyük bir katkı sağlamıştır. Nitekim bu eser, münferit olarak Got tarihini inceleyen dilimizdeki ilk kitap olması bakımından kayda değerdir. Bu eleştiri makalesi içerisindeki temel amaç, Peter Heather’ın Türkçeye çevrilen Gotlar eseri üzerine yoğunlaşmak olup çevirinin niteliğine dair çıkarımlarda bulunmaktır. Nitekim bu eser, Türkçe literatüre büyük bir katkı sağlasa da gerek bağlamsal gerek tarihsel gerekse de Latince, Yunanca isimlerin Türkçeye aktarılması anlamında pek çok hatayı barındırmaktadır. Genel anlamda geniş bir okuyucu kitlesine hitap eden Gotlar eserinin kitap eleştirisini yapmak, alan hakkında sınırlı bilgiye sahip olan okuyuculara birtakım ipuçları sağlayacaktır. Bunun yanında eserin ilk baskısının 2012 yılında yapılmış ve tükenmiş olmasına rağmen ikinci baskısının halen yapılmamış olması, eser çevirisinin gözden geçirilerek yeniden basılmasına vesile olabilecektir. Makale içerisinde taahhüt edilen bir diğer inceleme konusu ise Heather’ın tarihçiliği üzerine olacaktır. Nitekim Heather, Peter Brown tarafından Geç Antik Çağ paradigmasının ortaya atıldığı 1970’li yıllardan itibaren rafa kalkmış gibi görülen “çöküş” paradigmasının tekrar gündeme gelmesinde etkili olan en önemli yazarlardan biri olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Bu açıdan Gotlar eseri çerçevesinde Heather’ın bakış açısının değerlendirilmesi, Türkçe literatürün oldukça eksikliğini hissettiği, Antik Çağ özelindeki “çöküş” ve “dönüşüm” paradigmalarının da daha iyi anlaşılmasına katkı sağlayacaktır.

A Review of Peter Heather's “The Goths”

Abstract

The increasing number of scholarly works on Gothic history in Turkish academia has become notably visible. The 2012 Turkish translation of The Goths by English historian Peter Heather, completed by Erkan Avcı, has made a significant contribution to Turkish literature on Gothic history. This work is noteworthy for being the first book in Turkish to focus exclusively on Gothic history. This critical article aims to examine Peter Heather’s translated work on the Goths, with a specific focus on assessing the quality of the translation. Despite its considerable contribution to Turkish literature, the translated text is found to contain numerous errors, spanning contextual, historical, and linguistic nuances, particularly in rendering Latin and Greek names into Turkish. By critiquing “The Goths,” a work that enjoys a broad readership, this article aims to provide key insights for individuals with limited familiarity with the subject matter. Furthermore, the absence of a second edition since the initial publication in 2012, despite the first edition’s sold-out status, underscores the need for a reassessment of the translation and a potential reprinting of the book. Additionally, this article commits to exploring Peter Heather's historiographical framework. Since the 1970s, Heather has been a prominent figure in reviving the “decline” paradigm, which had previously faded after the Late Antiquity paradigm introduced by Peter Brown. Accordingly, an evaluation of Heather’s perspective in The Goths will contribute significantly to clarifying the “decline” and “transformation” paradigms, which are notably underrepresented in Turkish literature, especially within the context of Antiquity.
