Horse Figure and Horsemanship in Byzantine Cappadoccia: Wall Paintings and Their Reflections

Abstract

In the Byzantine Empire, the horse was generally regarded as a symbol representing both imperial and military authority. The Byzantines used horses mainly for transport, warfare, racing and parades. Moreover, the horse was considered a symbol of masculinity and the warrior spirit, and it was highly valued by the Emperor, the aristocracy, civil servants and the army. Therefore, it seems that even keeping a horse in a stable in the Byzantine period was a source of pride or a sign of status. Horses are also mentioned in Byzantine dream interpretation guidebooks, where they are associated with power and authority. The Empire's horse supply was provided by state-controlled stables, most of which were located in Cappadocia from the Roman period onward. In addition, Cappadocian horses are known to represent a distinct breed (or breeds) recognised throughout the Empire. The breed that resembled the horses bred in Cappadocia during Antiquity and the Middle Ages is thought to be the Kabardian (Circassian) breed of Azerbaijan. Byzantine artists were highly aware of the horses bred in Byzantine Cappadocia, which were integral to various aspects of daily life. As a matter of fact, wall paintings dated from the 9th-10th centuries to the 13th century depict numerous scenes with horse figures. The posture of the horses varied depending on the scene in which they were depicted. The horse figure is sometimes depicted in the foreground in the depictions of the bani, the saint on horseback, the army member (officer), and sometimes in the background, as in the scene of the worship of the three soothsayer kings. In the iconography of the mounted soldier, the horse is depicted together with a single soldier saint; it is also seen that two soldier saints and their horses are placed symmetrically and mutually on the stage. This article aims to address the gap in scholarship on this subject by analyzing horse figures in the Byzantine wall paintings of the Cappadocia region and to serve as a foundational source for future studies.

Bizans’ta Atçılık ve At Figürünün Bizans Kapadokya’sı Duvar Resim Sanatına Yansımaları

Abstract

Bizans İmparatorluğunda at, genellikle hem İmparatorluk hem de askerlik otoritesini temsil eden bir unsur olarak görülmüştür. Bizanslılar atları çoğunlukla ulaşım, savaş, yarış ve geçit törenleri için kullanmışlardır. Ayrıca, at imparatora, aristokrasiye, memurlara ve orduya yaraşır bulunmuş erkekliğin ve savaşçı ruhun sembolü olarak algılanmıştır. Dolayısıyla, Bizans döneminde bir atı barındırmanın bile bir gurur kaynağı ya da statü göstergesi olduğu anlaşılmaktadır. Bizans rüya tabirleri kılavuzları-kitaplarında da atlardan bahsedilmekte ve bu tür metinlerde, atların güç ve otorite ile bağlantılı olduğu görülmektedir. İmparatorluğun at tedariki ise devlet kontrolündeki haralardan karşılanmış ve bu at çiftliklerinin büyük çoğunluğu Roma döneminden itibaren Kapadokya'da yer almıştır. Ek olarak, Kapadokya atlarının İmparatorluk çapında tanınan gerçek bir ırkı (Ya da ırkları) temsil ettiği de bilinmektedir. Antik Çağ ve Ortaçağ boyunca Kapadokya'da yetiştirilen atlara benzeyen türün Azerbaycan'ın Kabardey (Çerkes) cinsi olduğu düşünülmektedir. Bizans Kapadokya’sında yetiştirilen ve hayatın neredeyse her alanında karşılaşılan atlara, Bizanslı sanatçılar da kayıtsız kalmamıştır. Nitekim 9.-10. yüzyıldan başlayarak 13. yüzyıla kadar tarihlendirilen duvar resimlerinde bolca at figürlü sahneye yer verildiği görülmektedir. Atların duruş pozisyonları resmedildikleri sahne ile bağlantılı olarak değişiklik göstermiştir. At figürü; kimi zaman bani, atlı aziz, ordu mensubu (Subay) tasvirlerinde ön planda, kimi zaman da üç müneccim kralın tapınması sahnesinde olduğu gibi arka fonda resmedilmiştir. Atlı asker ikonografisinde at tek bir asker aziz ile birlikte resmedildiği gibi; iki asker aziz ve atlarının sahneye simetrik ve karşılıklı olarak yerleştirildiği de görülmektedir. Bu makalede, Kapadokya bölgesi Bizans dönemi duvar resimlerinde yer alan at figürleri irdelenerek bu konudaki eksikliğin giderilmesi ve daha sonra yapılacak olan çalışmalar için de özgün temel bir kaynak oluşturulması amaçlanmıştır.
