A Versatile Scientist in the Middle Age: Michael Scot

Abstract

In Europe, enlightenment developments occured in almost every dicipline, especilally in science in XII and XIII. centuries. Accordingly, opening translation schools, systematizing them, providing financial supports and thus starting translation activities were the facts that ignited the wick. In these first steps taken, translation movements have a large share in this enlightenment. As a scientist, astrologer, philosopher and alchemist who made her mark on the 1200s one of the influential names in the beginning of these translation movements is Michael Scot. He made translations from the most famous scholars of the period such as Aristotle, Averroes, and Alpetragius, and introduced their works to the Western Christian World. On the one hand, he was accused of being a necromencer and sent to hell in the Divine Comedy by Dante, while on the other hand he was the chief advisor of the Holy Roman German Emperor. In this study, it is tried to be explained Michael Scot’s translations, works and his influences in Europe.

Orta Çağ’da Çok Yönlü Bir Bilim İnsanı: Michael Scot

Abstract

XII. ve XIII. yüzyıllarda Orta Çağ’da Avrupa’da hemen hemen her alanda bir aydınlanış söz konusu olmuştur. Bu aydınlanışta tercüme okullarının açılması, onların sistematize edilmesi, finansal desteğin sağlanması ve dolayısıyla tercüme faaliyetlerinin başlaması fitili ateşleyen olgulardır. Atılan bu ilk adımlarda söz konusu aydınlanmada çeviri hareketlerinin payı büyüktür. Bu çeviri hareketlerinin başlamasında etkili olan isimlerden bir de 1200’lü yıllara damgasını vurmuş bir bilim insanı, astrolog, filozof, simyager olan Micheal Scot’tur. Aristo, İbni Rüşd, El-Bitrujî gibi dönemin en ünlü alimlerinden çeviriler yaparak onların eserlerini Batı Hristiyan dünyası ile tanıştırmıştır . Bir taraftan büyücü olmakla suçlanıp Dante tarafından İlahi Komedya’da cehenneme gönderilirken diğer taraftan Kutsal Roma Cermen İmparatoru’nun baş danışmanlığına nail olmuştur. Bu çalışmada ise, Michael Scot’un çevirileri ve çalışmaları ile Avrupa’da uyandırdığı yankılar açıklanmaya çalışılmıştır.
