An Assessment on Peter Lombard's "Sentences"

Abstract

The author of the work "Sentences", which has been used as a theology textbook in the Western Christian world for centuries, is known as Peter Lombard. In addition to the Bible, it has been the subject of more interpretations among the works examined in theological terms. Although this work is seen as a compilation of ancient sources, its main importance lies in the organization of the theological material, the method of presentation and the way it deals with the doctrine in many important fields. Despite this importance, there is unfortunately no introduction to the life and thought of the author of the work. The work begins by revealing how the Christian tradition developed and then reveals the life and work of Lombard. The main topics are interpreted in the work, including God, trilogy, creation, angelology, human nature, ethics, the nature and qualities of rituals, and Christianity. Considered the most important theological textbook in the Middle Ages, "Sentences" consisted of the compilations of church fathers and commentators who emerged afterwards on a number of theological subjects. When divided into four books, it can be expressed as follows. The mystery of the Trinity belief / On Creation / On the Incarnation / The Doctrine of Signs (on rituals and ritual signs).

Peter Lombard’ın “Sentences”ı Üzerine Bir Değerlendirme

Abstract

Yüzyıllar boyunca Batı Hıristiyan dünyasında teoloji ders kitabı olarak okutulan “Sentences” adlı eserin yazarı Peter Lombard olarak bilinir. İncil’in yanı sıra teolojik açıdan irdelenen eserler arasında daha fazla yorumun konusu olmuştur. Bu eser her ne kadar eski kaynakların bir derlemesi olarak görülse de asıl önemi, teolojik materyalin organizasyonu, sunum yöntemi ve birçok önemli alanda doktrini ele alma biçiminde yatmaktadır. Bu öneme rağmen eserin yazarının yaşamı ve düşüncesine dair herhangi bir giriş ne yazık ki yoktur. Eser Hıristiyanlık geleneğinin nasıl geliştiğini ortaya koyarak başlar ve sonrasında Lombard’ın yaşamını ve çalışmalarını ortaya koyar. Tanrı, üçleme, yaratılış, angeloloji, insan doğası, etik, ayinlerin doğası ve nitelikleri, Hıristiloji de dahil olmak üzere ana konular eserde yorumlanmaya çalışılır. Orta Çağ’daki en önemli teolojik ders kitabı olarak kabul edilen “Sentences”, kilise babalarının ve sonrasında ortaya çıkan yorumcuların bir dizi teolojik konudaki derlemelerinden meydana gelmiştir. Dört kitap halinde ayrıştırıldığında aşağıdaki gibi ifade edilebilir. Teslis inancının gizemi / Yaratılış üzerine / Enkarnasyon üzerine /İşaretler Doktrini (ayinler ve ayinsel işaretler üzerine).
