Bizans Coğrafyası

Abstract

Bu bölüm, Erken Bizans dönemindeki Yunan coğrafi yazımı ve coğrafya algısının çeşitli biçimlerini ve yöntemlerini ortaya koymaktadır. Bizans için coğrafya, eski Yunanlıların birikimlerinin belirli dönem yazarları tarafından aktarılması ve bu bilgi birikiminin, el yazmalarının birebir kopyalanarak, eski yazılardan alıntılar yapılarak veya müstakil izahlar eklenerek kullanılması anlamına geliyordu. Bizanslıların coğrafya bilgilerini ve algılarını en çok etkileyen iki antik dönem yazarı Strabon ve Ptolemaios idi. Ayrıca Marcianus, Protagoras, Hierocles ve Stephanos tarafından yazılanlar gibi coğrafi incelemelerin yanı sıra, birçok tarihi kaynak coğrafya ile ilgili kapsamlı ilaveler (örneğin Philostorgius) içeriyordu. Elçilerin raporları da genellikle ziyaret ettikleri bölgelerin coğrafi bir analizini ihtiva ediyordu. Antakya okulunun Hıristiyanları (Antakyalı Theophilus, Tarsuslu Diodorus, Misisli (Mopsuestia) Theodorus, İskenderiyeli Kosmas) dünyanın yuvarlak olduğu teorisini reddetme eğilimindeydiler. Seyahatnameler ve seyyahların raporları, insanların nasıl seyahat ettiğine dair fikirler vermektedir. Tabula Peutingeriana, M.S. 435 civarında Roma yollarını gösterir.
